    G'day all,

A couple of days ago I found a lamp that was in my top 3 of lamps I wished to own. It didn't have to be this particular model just one from the family of outdoor lamps that Gloria produced. Having seen it, I'm not entirely convinced it is a Gloria lamp, it may be one of the Doran Lights that Acorn Brass MFG Co produced for Robert Doran prior to Doran creating the Gloria Light Co.

I can find this lamp in Gloria catalogues. There is no doubt that Gloria did produce such a lamp, the problem is did Acorn Brass also produce the lamp. It all comes down to the burner and whether Doran used the earlier Doran burner in his later Gloria lamps. I have every intention of trying to work out whom did produce this lamp but it may not be easy.

I have to once again thank @Anthony . Without his help I could not have attained this lamp. Anthony drove 30 minutes to pick this lamp up and I will be forever grateful.

Anthony has taken the photos of the lamp. During a phone call with Anthony, he told me he cannot fault the lamp, it looks brand new. He couldn't find a blemish apart from a scuff on the globe. Anthony said the lamp is very dirty and in the photos that grime gives the illusion the lamp is brass. Not so, it is copper that has been nickelled. Anthony says the nickel is in fantastic order. Anthony also told me he had looked into the generator and the packing is white. The packing being white will mean the lamp has only been lit once, if at all.

These are from a 1907 Acorn catalogue.

Anthony, thanks. I have a problem with one of the computers I use, I can't access a lot of my material because of a RAM issue.

It is interesting that Acorn, in 1907, were still handling lamps that Doran invented considering Gloria Light Co was up and running by then. It is more than likely that Gloria simply had Acorn make the ones Gloria retailed too at least the body of the lamp. Gloria may have manufactured the burners and assembled from there. That arrangement may or may not have changed once Frank Kohlhase bought Acorn Brass in 1914.

This lamp is the type of lamp that Gloria could have managed to manufacture themselves.

    @Anthony

I forgot to mention, it would appear that this lamp is the same body of lamp that you need to fit your 'Wonderful Doran' into.

I strongly suggest that you take measurements and or keep the lamp until you can take it to a metal shop and see if they will make one for you.

I have recently sent the metal chimney and reflector off my White MFG arc lamp to @outback boy so he can get copies done. You may give Frank a hoy and see how he is approaching getting copies done.

Matty, 5 big blokes with guns just burst in the back door and took the lamp.
There was nothing I could do.

Only 5 and only guns, no grenades? You should have been able to handle them.

Opportunities for you to get a body made up for your lamp will be far and few between I suspect.

You should at least put your lamp in the body and take a photo. There is still the bottom part that holds the globe. I would think a machinist worth his salt could make one up from a photo. Especially so because you have the globe that will give him measurements.

That globe of yours is one of the most special ones I have seen. Being original - just awesome.

I wonder what I would find on ebay.com if I looked? I don't dare look in case I see something. I'm as poor as a church mouse and am lucky to afford the oxygen I breathe.

    Hi Matty,

Do you have a hunch what you might find, if you did happen to take a peek, which of course you haven't? :content:

No, that's the beauty of looking on ebay after you haven't for so long. Most of the stuff is fresh, all the stuff you'd seen before has gone. I'm not keen on looking because I'm broke as a two bob watch. Over the last month or so, I have been buying stuff to get my plating going and replenishing stuff I've run out of or an close to running out of.

One thing I would expect to find is some nice shades that aren't expensive. It crushes me that I can't find in Australia what can be found in America. Shades so cheap but then the postage is a killer plus the very unfair GST tax now placed on 2nd hand goods AND POSTAGE. Postage has long been out of hand then ebay slaps you with 10% and now our own government has placed a 10% tax on it. It is outrageous.

I may have to prise the Acorn/Gloria out of @Anthony cold dead hands.
