So... the UK is finally on lock-down, which is both scary but necessary given the number of people openly disregarding the government's pleas to the contrary. But... my wife and I have plenty of things to do though: I have plenty of fettling, we both love cooking, we can read, I have quite a few DIY and house repair chores on my to do list, the wife and I love chatting and watching films on Netflix and Amazon and of course there's walking in the beautiful isolation of the countryside around our bit of the Scottish Highlands. If anyone's feeling a bit iffy and needs to chat, you can log in to CPL and there will always be someone to natter to, from The US to New Zealand, Finland to South Africa... and everywhere in between. Daughter in NZ as an Au pair is going in for 4 weeks as of wednesday. She already made a plan what to do with the kids. So no worries here and there.
What to do with big kids though? My husband has no live sport to watch, no cricket pitch to get ready for play next month, he doesn’t read, chat or watch films (or anything else really apart from sport) and he has already done much of the painting in the house. Tidying the garage will keep him occupied for a few days though. Might get him onto fettling a few lamps for me for the virtual Newark too.
Well Tony, sod’s law at work again, we did away with the veggie patch and some flower beds a couple of years ago in order to save our backs. It was a case of dig for 10 minutes digging and a week at rest. Grass is kept tidy with ride-on mower put in plastic window frames so no outdoor maintenance. Thank goodness we have a dog to walk and plenty open fields to walk around. Thank goodness for theinternet and especially for CPL!
@Jean J maybe you could get John cataloguing all you spare parts, down to the last washer. You might even find things you’ve forgotten about (I’m not suggesting dementia!).... You could play games like snap or top trumps with all those old pumps... New sport here is chasing off camper vans...
I have another game for you @Jean J ... seeing how many complete lamps you can make from the parts you have available. I've found enough to make three so far: A 246 Guardsman, a Bialaddin 305 and a PL53 although I still need globes for the PL53 and the 305. There's another steel PL53 but I need a lathe to work on the pump as it leaks. There's also most of a Coleman 220 that needs looking over so I might assemble the parts I have to see what's missing. In fact, I might list the bits and pieces I've got that I don't need and post them on here... maybe we can have fun exchanging parts with each other, who knows?
What about making sculptures from all the spare parts, that might be interesting. The more rust the better.
I have resorted to starting to polish all my spare Bialaddin burner nuts. Just need some lamps to fit them too now.
Day 1 of our lockdown. Went into work yesterday (garage), but we have now closed down. Luckily over night the DVSA has decided Mots due on or after the 30th of March will automatically be given a 6 month extension. So that takes the pressure off for now. Bacon butty in the sunshine is in order. Stay safe all, look forward to when things get back to some sort of normal.
I might have taken you up on that a few days ago Paul but happened to be in the Co-op on Monday before the lockdown when they’d just had a delivery so I’m sorted now for bog roll.
Bog rolls.. why is everyone fixated with the possession of this piece of modern life here in the Uk.. people buying more than will ever ever use in the memory of man .. last week ..Two men recently talking to each other at a local market before social distancing .." Mick I went into Morrisons t'other day ..not a bog roll to be had ! " 2nd male " " Now Pat that is not a problem for me I have garden full of dock leaves ( Rumex obtusifolius ) " I could only chuckle at this ....he was so genuine .. ! Sados buying us all out of bog rolls ! Supermarkets for not limiting stock
I have about 200 bog rolls. NOT panic buying at the last minute and depriving others, but I always keep a good supply. They come in cartons of 108 rolls, and when stocks drop to one complete carton, I Order another lot. Last order received just before Christmas. The only panic buying here was cat food, as cat has a special low mineral dried food, and propane.
We don't have many paracetamols but the shops seem to be restocking so it's really not a problem. We already keep a stock of most things so we don't have to go into town, so a few tins and a bag of yeast was all we needed.
