    A very fortunate haul today!

I definitely have enough to keep me going now (pretty sure I said that last week).

1957 Tilley Guardsman with deep Davisil globe, funnel and box

1948 Coleman 249 (Canada) - fitted with Austramax globe, need to find original!

    1981 Coleman 201

Aladdin 1A? Missing top, looks more modern than the other one I have.

Took a chance on a Solar 350CP and a Light Brand 350CP. Gifted the LB and made someone very happy

The 249 even came with a mantle and fired up first time (couldn’t resist)

The Aladdin with that metal stick-on label is towards the end of production as far as I can tell.

You can buy new Coleman globes on the Bay of Evil.

Is your Aladdin hood deep black, or a bit bluish?

    Cheers

    Tony

    Thanks, @Buckaroo.

You will have to braze a new bolt. I’ll look in my shed and see if I’ve got a spare cap and top nut.

Cheers @Tony Press, much appreciated - it’s about time my fettling went beyond punching new seals and cleaning/polishing!

Yes that version of the sticker is the last type used. That logo was registered in 1970, so it's from after that. The top should be black enamel.

That's a mighty impressive haul! I reckon the Colemans will 'just work' and the Tilley is in tip-top condition. Solar lanterns are well made and rather good looking once they're polished a bit and the Aladdin looks good too.

That’s a very good score. There are some good fettling projects there to keep you out of trouble during this current Covid-19 episode.
Don’t forget to post the money shots.
    Cheers

Thanks all for the advice above - much appreciated. Nice pic @ROBBO55.

Fired up the Tilley today, not fired one up before and even though it was pulsing like crazy and spilling kero from the cock it sure looked special.

I’ll give it a clean and replace the seals already on order from the fettlebox.

I love the speculum plated guardsman, they're probably one of the best looking Tilleys ever made. Just a shame there are relatively few of them in the UK as they were mostly for export.

I have a couple of spare Aladdin tops but, unfortunately, only brass/nickel ones. You are welcome to have one while you search for a black one. I have a spare burner j-tube if you're not confident to do the silver solder braze. and I have other Aladdin spares if you need them - have a good look at what you've got in front of you, and let me know.

    Cheers

    Tony

    Thanks @Tony Press

I’ve got 3 Aladdin’s (below) so will take a close look and get back to you. My neighbour knows a bit about brazing and he’s offered to help me out when he’s finished his driveway.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been buying up anything old, dirty and cheap - it’s been a good way to learn a bit about the different lamps whilst I slowly start to tackle them.

And all the folks on here have been more than helpful - hopefully I’ll return the favour as I learn and earn my stripes.

NB - these Aladdin’s all have a common fault with the broken top. The oldest one on the right will not unscrew (even after soaking the thing in WD40 for two days and swearing at it loudly). I’m guessing people over tighten them.

Reading through the other threads the cracks at the bottom of the tank are pretty common too... don’t appear to have punctured it though

It's not unusual for an Aladdin 1A that's been 'left in the shed' for a long time to have the cap nut fused to the rusty screw. They are a real bastard to pull apart sometimes.

    Good luck

I had that exact problem with my hood nut on my only Aladdin.
Got it loose by heating the nut to red hot and working it back and forth gently.

I'd be happy to send you a replacement burner for the cost of postage.

I must admit I get a bit brutal at this point. If heat doesn't work I just shear the stud off and replace it. I drill out the broken stud in the cap nut and re tap the thread. They are a steel stud with brass nuts and as Tony said they seem to fuse together.

    Your welcome.
The bracket holding the stud is just clamped to the vice jaws.

Not been able to tackle the Aladdin yet so I decided to get the 201 cleaned up today. Pretty straightforward after a successful test fire.

I hadn’t lit a lamp without a mantle before and I’ve got to say, it was lots of fun...

I was surprised at the style of hollow nut being used at the base of the frame (this won’t be breaking news to you all I’m sure).

    AB532EB0-D897-41F7-82D9-EDECA5AB390B.jpeg

It’s not going to win any beauty contests, but neither am I so I’m quite happy with it.

But then this happened whilst I was writing this post! Looks like there’s a leak! It got a lot bigger after pausing to take a photo so switched it off...

Bugger! but it's not unusual for screwed pieces to expand and leak sometimes when they heat up. Check the mounting surfaces are not damaged then try again. A little copper or nickel grease (anti seize) helps when assembling components.

The 201 is a nice little lantern when you get it going.

Hi from Albury, with the Alladins you could try laying hood nut on its side on some hard wood or nylon block and tapping on other side as you rotate with nylon or wood hammer then grip with pliers with leather strap wrap around nut try to undo ((heat and quench) will sometimes loosen corrosion too)

Here! Here! On the tapping. Judicious peening will strech the metal almost imperceptably.

Well done @Buckaroo on the getting 201 up and running. They’re good lanterns and will give reliable service.
