Just finished fettling my Third Tilley it's a lovely Guardsman, here's the money shot, very pleased with it I painted the cage Green but may change it later. But having trouble with "pump creep" I have put a new non return valve in and made sure there is no debris, but it's still filling with fuel, I may try stretching the spring.
That’s looking great, well fettled! The NRV spring needs a stretch or replacing. Also make sure the NRV is screwed in fairly tight, I’ve had one come loose after a fettle. So, what’s next? Stevie
From time to time, I've seen tapered springs in NRVs. If you've got one of those it needs to go with the wide end at the bottom and the narrow end at the top, nearest the rubber pip otherwise it won't seal properly. It's easy to put them back the wrong way. Stretching the spring slightly does help and sometimes you just have to persevere and re-assemble it 3-4 times
Looks good @Pitsmoor Col Colin. One lamp leads to two that leads to three that leads to......well you’ve seen my shed...
Pump problem solved, many thanks to Gary Waller. After having it in bit's for the umpteenth time I discovered on closer inspection there was some very light damage to the valve seat preventing it from sealing properly, another pump supplied thanks to Gary.
That's the pump that came with the lamp when I bought it yrs & yrs ago. Not knowing anything about Tilley Lamps or any other lamp I never knew it was the wrong one..
@Pitsmoor Col Well done on the fettle, she sure looks and runs very well. Yes the NRV needs to be overhauled. When I overhaul a Tilley NRV, or any NRV for that matter, I give the NRV the suck test as follows: On the Tilley remove the cock from the tank and then the generator. With the cocks knob turned fully to the position to extend the pricker, fully clockwise, suck on the cock's generator orifice. You should be able pull a partial vacuum and it should hold until you twiddle the cock's knob anticlockwise thus letting air back in. Using this test ensures that the NRV is working before you assemble the parts. Hope this helps. Cheers Pete
