As I had a spare glass, the old deeper one and a spare control cock and vaporizer i was looking out for an old guardsman without a glass. This came for sale on wotsit bay and I was surprised when I got it for £11.50. Looking forward to cleaning, servicing and getting it up and running. Am I correct in thinking its mid 50's? Is the control cock fitting into the fount normal? Thanks in advance for your replies
Hi John, the brass collar under the control cock enables you to position the cock in any position between the cage legs. Regards ian
That's always been my understanding, too. However, I've never had a problem with the positioning of the control cock on any of my X246s so I've never had the need to figure out how the set-up actually works I'd be much obliged if someone were to explain it for me. Please keep it simple for an owld gadgie...
I'm with you, David! Maybe the understanding lies in "skull thickness"...lol I've never had a reason to screw around with one of these so I left well enough alone...
@george & @David Shouksmith The brass collar under the control cock comes in handy, especially if you end up with the control wheel lining up with the upright on the cage. I usually screw the collar down to “just tight” then loosen it off a little bit. Then make sure the control cock is just tight. A little bit of fiddling to then tighten them both means that you can get the control wheel at any angle to the pump you want: good for left or right handers. I’ve come to the conclusion that I like the control wheel to be at 90° to the right of the pump. This set up is good if you need the control cock to be set in a fixed position, like on a R46 Tilley radiator. Cheers Tony
I would say 1956 with that tank profile, and tank stamping. The reason I asked about the date is that the control wheel seems older than the tank/cage. Tony
On closer examination of the bottom there is a stamp 259XA there maybe a 1 in front of it or it might just be a scratch plus Made in England
