This is exactly how it came to me with the original glass. Big thank you to @Alex Smith for taking the time to get this for me and sending it to me. I owe you one fella!

I'll post more photos as I clean and fettle it but it doesn't seem to need that much work. It even had a mantle fitted when it was picked up so it may have been working when it was last used if that makes sense.

Blimey, I hadn't even noticed that. Is it normal or was used on other Veritas lanterns?

And thanks again @Alex Smith it was very well packaged and arrived in good time considering we're on the West Coast of Scotland - most things take an extra day to get here. It's roastingly hot here so we're inside swealtering!

Oh, and on a different topic our septic tank water outfall is blocked so we're waiting for a drainage guy to come and take a look, but now everything is open again everyone is getting their problems fixed so it'll be Monday before that happens. No washing machine, no dish washer, no baths, quick showers and going to the toilet is..... interesting shall we say. Might go ask the neighbours for a few favours! Welcome to the Highlands!

@BigStevie you'll know what it's like living up here!

I just looked through the Veritas section and couldn't see a single red control knob.... although I probably didn't look hard enough.

Soon Norman.... it's so bloody hot here I'm inside drinking plenty and sweating. In the UK we don't commonly have AC in our homes, mainly because it never gets hot enough.... until recently of course!

It's not just the Highlands. My biggest walk of shame in recent years (just after we moved in) was to go around to our elderly neighbors and ask them not to use the bath, washing machine etc coz the whole thing would over flow (we had sandbags around the top of the tank at this point). Took a while to sort the problem, turned out to be the outflow. You have my sympathy Colin.

It's the brother of mine, only the steel part of the hood is in better condition than mine and yours is nickel plated - very nice!

So there are other red knobs out there.

    @MG

Your Veritas 350 looks very good indeed.

Cleaning the rust off of the hood/vent and burner frame should be easy mostly because it isn't heavily rusted like most I see.

    Happy fettling.

    Cheers,
    Norman

I tried a new technique on the hood....

    IMG_20200814_182211_3.jpg

The steel base was cleaned and heeted and oil was wiped over the surface... Idid this 5 times to buildup a thick carbonised layer like you would on a cast iron pan. It should last ok if I wipe it with an oily piece of kitchen paper towel.

Here it is on the gas stove being treated.

Thanks Norman, yes i need to get it sorted, it has lived indoors since i noticed the surface rust, strangely although it looked nos/vgc it was missing the handle and mantle support etc so i will need to cannibalise another one to make this one run.

You’re not alone with septic tank problems. When my old mum was still with us she flushed no end of destructive items into the system and after two attempts to fix it, the thing is still playing up...

I’ll have a word with Ann and find out what’s best for your red knob.

I rubbed it vigorously with T-cut and it polished up a treat.

I've been cleaning up the parts but noticed the collar/frame support has two cracks... but literally as I was taking these photos it split completely! This is a shame as it was stamped with an 'A'... although it appears to be a model 'B'.

I have a replacement from a donor Superb which isn't perfect but it fits and heck, it'll make it complete at least.

The fount, pump, filler cap, control assembly are now scrubbedup and it's looking OK. The frame was quite rusty and is still being treated but all in all it's going well...

I used T-Cut motor polish on the paintwork for the first time on a lantern and it works very well! Hopefully someone won't now tell me it eats through the paint!

Looks great, is there any way you can fix the collar? Could you take a small piece of metal and place it inside the collar and secure it with J B Weld? Piece of metal could hold the collar together and you wouldn't even see it looking at it from the outside. Clear as mud, right?!! lol

I've tried before with a Coleman collar and the result was a disaster! It might to be possible but I'm not skilled enough ](*,)

I'll keep the original just in case I feel clever one day!
