Just had this guardsman delivered, it's in lovely condition with unmarked Brown top, Deep Glass and a few spares that came with it, new vaporiser, Two lighting torches one which is new, Spare wick, Mantle, and Pricker. Total cost inc P&P £15.20p. I am still nipping myself to see if I am still awake. It's been left in an attic for years so it's a bit grubby but will come up quite nice with not too much effort. It's in bit's at the moment in the Citric Acid bath, The only problem I have is getting the nut off the pump to see what the leather cup is like, it just will not budge, I have tried gentle heat with hot water but no luck. Has anybody got any suggestions ?
Forgot to add in my last post, there is no date stamp, it's stamped "Made in England" with a Capital "T" stamped above it. Can anyone tell me a date for this lamp ? Thank You.
A lucky find and it's a mid 1950's lantern. Do you mean the pump knob is stuck or the pump cap is stuck? If it's the pump knob, then that does not need to be removed to inspect the pump leather, just unscrew the cap and the entire pump rod will pull out. If the pump cap is stuck, then protect the pump flange with a piece of leather and grip it in a vice and also protect the pump cap and then grip it with a set of pliers, try to tighten it a touch first as that often frees it and then unscrew it. Do let us know how you get on.

That's a lovely lamp there!!The price you bought it is a really bargain, I paid over £100 for buying pieces to build a Guardsman!! Well done Where can someone find this kind of deals? Is any auction site I am not aware of?
Amazing, don't know about other but I often wonder if there are hardly used lamps like this sitting in lofts waiting to be picked up at car boot sales etc especially with a pristine brown hat like this one.
@Pitsmoor Col Great find! I found one in its box, lit once, similar condition last year for an extravagant £25. They’re still out there, tucked away in attics and cellars. The additional parts are a very large cherry on the already tasty cake... Well done!

Hi Gary, Yes they are difficult to find but as others have said there are still some out there. I came across this one on a site called "Preloved" advertised at £10. so I enquired about it and the guy said he would find out postage cost and then get in touch. He sent a txt to say the postage would be £5.20. So of course I said yes please. I consider myself very luck finding this one.
Got it all cleaned up, now just waiting for the Postman to bring some nice new seals and non return valve's. Then it's back together and the Money Shot. (hopefully)
Well the postman came this morning, so It's rebuilt and lit. Here is the Money Shot. But it looks like there is quite a lot of flame outside of the Mantle. Is it getting too much fuel ? if it is how do I adjust the mixture ?
@Pitsmoor Col Hi Colin, Sometimes new mantles take 20 / 30 minutes to fully bed in, failing that I fear you may have excessive ware on the vaporiser jet, resulting in too much fuel entering the burner, hence the over-burn you see outside the mantle. If that's the case....new vaporiser....
Hi Colin. As Gary says it is 99% of the time that the jet is enlarged. The quickest way to prove/disprove this is swap it for another one. If you have another Tilley lamp that works well switch them over. You should be able to not damage the mantle(s) if careful. As you might appeciate you can't easily make the hole where the fuel comes out smaller. Good luck Chris

I have put a new vaporiser on and it's much better, the new vaporiser came with the Lamp along with some other bits. Its a really nice Lamp, I have not had to do much to it, just clean it up and fit new seals to it. I am just not keen on these Mantles. Genuine X Mantle part Number 164 X. But I do have some others I got from Base Camp which I think are better.
That's interesting, I have tried a couple of old original tilley ones lately and I'm not over impressed. Would be interesting to hear what you find with the other ones. That's a great lamp by the way, I have a couple but nothing like that one.
@Darren Holt The early Tilley 171 globe was deeper in the bottom dished section than later 171 globes. Cheers Tony
