OK, let's starts with a few rules.

Don't post anything from an ongoing eBay auction - finished auction photos are fine
Don't be mean about another member's restoration techniques
No arguing for heaven's sake! - this is meant to be fun!

As this was my idea (kind of), I'll start. I found this delightfully 'upcycled' creation on Gumtree. Enjoy!

The creator has managed to wreck the tank, hood, control valve and maybe even the burner, who knows. Quality upcycling at its best.

Good grief! Someone went out of their way to make the most ridiculous looking monstrosity. A matching pair too! Hilarious!

All joking apart, here’s a thing.

For owners of e-type Jaguars, jaguar themselves now make an electric motor conversion kit for the cars. This kit uses all existing mountings etc as to not detract from the car’s originality. Perhaps a non invasive electrification kit might save lamps from destruction and at the same time fulfil the needs of the upcyclers.

Alternatively, might I suggest a VERY invasive electrification kit for the perpetrators...

Did anyone else see the episode of Salvage Hunters in which Drew Pritchard bought a pile of totally original pmax doughnut lamps for a song and electrocuted the lot? Heartbreaking stuff.

How can thinking putting the bulb outside the lamp be seen as a good idea? Bizarre.

Optimus electrified a load of lamps. Model 1200 from memory. I believe they were a faulty batch & someone had the clever idea of converting them to electric for the marine market. They were fitted with gimbals.

I have one wired up in the loft.

I guess if Optimus did it it has to be acceptable by default and I'd certainly have one.

O’ my God, @ColinG that picture makes me feel quite chunderish (Violently sick, possibly projectile).
    As my Dad would say,
“Some people need to be shot with a ball of their own dung!”.

The Petromax conversion is rather neat and reversible, so it doesn't count as a monstrosity in my eyes.

Neither does Ross's Optimus lantern in mine. In fact, I'd rather like to have one - although that would be another idea I'd nicked from him...

If you want to see abominations, go to Etsy and search for Coleman lantern.

Some of the conversions don't make sense.

Why? Why would anyone do such a thing?

But despite the horrors, I found myself looking for parts that could be salvaged, like the Preston loop and the control valve... and the knob might be ok maybe?
