Found this Petromax 829 for about $50. It has a date code of 010129 under the base. And came with a load of mantles.
I haven’t prices mantles but I thought the mantles alone might be worth it. I probably have 10 of them.
Its a petromax from china production as the tank has the 6 digit number. Production probably in the first decade of this century.
@bp4willi Are the ones from China of lesser quality? Do you mean first decade of 21st or 20th century? Are these less worthy Petromax?
I also found some paperwork that was sent to me from the guy I brought this from. It appears this is a refurbished Petromax. Perhaps there’s a mismatch of parts?
21st century tank. Its said, the older makes from 60ties would be better quality. But i dont agree. All years have their faults. The early chinese production from mid to end 90ties had more often cracks in the brass sheet of the tank. And the nozzle and jet precision is worse. But any Petromax will work fine after qualified fettling, with some standard improvements. Such as brass mesh or stranded copper wire lining for the vaporiser.
Can't say very much on the quality. It appears to me that the metal work, stampings and features are somewhat less well-defined than the earlier German Petromaxes made by Ehrich and Graetz or just Graetz. But then, as long as its not leaking and functional, I'd say its still a worthy lantern.
