    We have a meeting coming up; gotta have the ladies ready to go. I used the wrong meths and blackened the mantle with soot; I’ve got to let it burn off now.

    Hello Tony,

    Yes, I normally use denatured alcohol; what I found in the shed was a product for thinning paint. While it would burn it produced a nasty black film all over everything it touched.

    I picked up some proper alcohol today and it works very well with a clean burning flame.

    Sometimes I drag out an American lamp. This is the 1938 low valve model 154, made in Canada.

    @John
    I did the same some time ago. I grabbed a bottle of Shellite, sold in a similar bottle to the meths, without looking and used it in the meths cup, it burnt very smokily leaving a black sooty residue all over the mantle ...... bugger!
    Cheers
    Pete

    Thank you Jeff, I found that it is hard to photograph a lamp with a reflector. 8]

    Thank you all for the kind words; it’s a meager collection but I do like them to put in the work.

    Some nice lamps there, John.
    Especially the Coleman!
    I'm surprised that you have so few American lamps.

    @Carlsson

    Coleman has its place in my collection; they are great running lamps and seldom give me trouble.

    They just sit farther from the shed door.
