    Hello,

Im new to this forum, but have been reading threads for a while.

I just won a beautiful hipolito h-502 lantern from eBay. I haven’t received it yet, and want to make sure I have everything I need in terms of mantles and repair/maintenance items for the long term.

For mantles, I’m looking at the peerless 24a’s. I want the light to be more yellow than white because it’s easier on the eyes. Please recommend the best mantle with yellow light and high durability.

Please also direct me to a good place to buy backup seals, pump cups and other items that wear down over time.

    Thank you very much,

    Willy

    Thank you very much!

what is the difference between the 24a and 111 mantles?

What about the wear and tear components? Any good sites to purchase these? I’m preparing for the end of times! Haha

Pelam is a proven source, they are based in Germany.
Brytelyt (USA) sells parts for their Petromax clones, but I personally have no experience with, never purchased anything from them.

    Welcome Willyh,
Which ever the brands, you can actually buy a few different ones as suggested to try out.
If you're looking for those that emit yellower light, I'd say the non-radioactive yttria-based ones would stand better chances. It depends how yellow you'd like them to be.

I use 24As on my 550 and other big 500cp lanterns, they give a really bright white light and when not in use appear so thin they are nearly invisible from about 10 feet away. They are rugged enough that they withstand regular moving around the place but I haven't used a 500 out-and-about (ie in my camper) so I can't vouch for them that way.

Is it an option to use a frosted glass? That would give a nice diffused (but still whiter than you would probably like) light?

    Alec.

I think that the 24's are better suited to the 350CP lanterns, but the 500CP lanterns (such as the H502) are better served by the 111 mantles. Like others have said, avoid the thorium ones for a more mellow light.

Thanks for the replies. I bought 24a’s, so I hope they work well. I also bought another glass glove with vertical frosting lines.

I've used frosted globes on Petromax style lanterns and they're blooming great... apart from the shenanigans you end up going through when you have to light them! Once lit, the frosted glass gives a wonderfully bright, diffuse light I really like... it's just a royal pain when lighting them!

Why is it difficult to light the lantern with the frosted glass vs the original?

Simply because you can't see what's going on! Filling the pre-heater cup becomes a problem because you can't see the fuel level or even where you're pouring it and when you do manage to light the meths/denatured alcohol, it's very hard to gauge when it's time to start pumping. If you can find a frosted glass with clear patches you can at least see what you're doing which I suppose is why Coleman made quite a few different half frosted globes with different patterns.

That said, I much prefer the diffuse light they provide.

    Sounds good, thanks.

This might be a silly question, but is it still possible to use a pressure lantern without the glass. Let’s say it breaks and you need to light and heat in an emergency.

    Regards,

    William

You can but if there's any wind or sudden movement the mantles will break. When I'm setting up a lantern for the first time I go to the garage and take the glass off.

    Welcome !

I confirm ! Pelam.de is a really good reseller, a lot of orders without any issue, and fast shipping.
One of the best thing : they sell Aladdin Mantle (and lamps !) at a very good price. So i've bought Petromax Spares on this site too.

    @ColinG, thank you. Makes sense.

@Hebusletroll, thanks. I tried their site, but the shipping is very expensive to Canada.

In Australia the mantles wouldn’t last 5 minutes: the moths would wreck them.

You can buy stainless steel mesh globes for Coleman and similar sized lanterns.

Absolutely. When I fire a lamp up after extensive fettling, I neither use a globe or a mantle. Its a good way of testing the quality of the burn without risking wasting a mantle.
Similarly when I am burning-in a new mantle I do it without the glass fitted, that stops any sooting up or risks of hot-spots from a mantle flame cracking a (sometimes difficult to obtain) glass.
