Hi! From Spain comes back home to Sweden this beauty. A Primus 158 från 1935 (Z). I didn't manage to give it a fettling for now but it is high on the list. I like the system to lock the burner caps, very efficient and retains the cap on place. Is placed next to a Optimus 703F with a replacement dome. Enjoy! Cheers, Francisc
Very nice find. This is the earliest 158 I have seen, maybe it is the first year they were made. They are not mentioned in a 1934 catalogue, but are in a 1937 catalogue. I don't have any mention of heaters in between. Now you just need to find the heater dome and support arm.
The heater dome i see that is similar to the one on Svea heaters and thanks to @Nicola i have them. I received also an image of the holding arm and i don't think that it is so hard to recreate. @Nils Stephenson i saw your documentary about this heater and i was extra hapy when i saw the production year. If that is burning on alcohol, then it is set up correctly for that fuel. It must be a later replacement though as I have never heard of a 158 using alcohol. The 158 should use the 4047 burner as used on the Primus 107 stove (and a few others).
@Nils Stephenson when cleaning i saw that the hole is larger than any jet i have and the same with cleaning needle. I put fotogen first but the flame was halv meter high and very yellow, changed the fuel to alcohol and get that nice blue flame. I have just one Primus 1020 what runs on alcohol and it is long time ago i served that lamp. Thanks for the number of the jet, now i know what i need to search for and replace so i can run fotogen. I had to fix few stuff inside the burner, the rising pin was bend because somebody didn't notice that the pin moved from side to the back and when tensioning the knob he has damaged the cogs and the gears (?). But with some patience and small detail instruments i manage to fix them so that it is possible to use then. I straighten the riser pin, is not perfect straight but it dose its jobb. Cheers, Francisc
4047 is the number of the complete burner, not just the jet. I don't have access to any of my catalogues just now, but it wouldn't be hard to find the correct jet and cleaning needle by looking up the 107 stove. For yours to be running that well on alcohol, it must have a very large jet. What is the diameter of the cleaning needle?
@Nils Stephenson i found the jet and needle number ( 4395 and 6132), it was easier when i have few other options to search for. I'm gonna measure the jet, but i don't know if i have a such sensible caliper. Cheers, Francisc
Thanks to the Nicola from CCS site for the image. I'm ok with the result. It should have been thicker rod but that means more job and i don't have any thicker rod for now.
That dome is certainly heating up. I wonder if it is actually too low. On my heaters, the bottom edge of the dome is approximately 15mm above the outer edge of the burner. I am a bit concerned that with the dome so low the burner itself might heat up too much and get damaged.
@Nils Stephenson it is not quite so hot and so bright it has some fotogen drops in the tank efter switching the fuel and the picture is taken when the short fireball come out and lighted everything around I just tried to see if the setting is ok. I need a more thicker rod (6mm instead of the 4mm i used). In this picture you can see that the dome is not so low, but probably it's gonna be higher when i change the holding rod. I wouldn't say stupid. What you've done so far is pretty good. I look forward to seeing the version 2 of the holding arm. If you need any pictures or dimensions, just let me know. I can see I should have some more detailed pictures of my own heaters. I just noticed the interesting bottles in the background of your last photo. I hope that's not what you're running the heater on.
@Nils Stephenson here comes v2 It keeps a higher level to the burner. Most probably is the last alcohol burning for a while, i just received the kerosene burner. When i swap them, i take pictures comparing the thickness of the needle. No, those bottles are most for design, lately. Cheers, Francisc
