Greetings fellow followers of the magic

Well, after posting a restore shot of a Radius earlier today
    .
It would seem the lamp gods are smiling

A friend sent me a pic from a scrap yard he was visiting while dropping some bits

20 Minutes later another Radius joined my ranks

This after a very long - ( 2 sec Deal ) for the princely sum of 40 ZAR
I felt to bad to pay the 40 bucks so offered 50

In GBP that is 2 Quid

    Radius Again.jpg

Not 100 Percent all there - but enough to make a decent lamp out of

Tonight we will start our process with a good hot bath in some citric water

    Watch this space

Thanks to the mods fort the edits

My story that was lost during the load-shedding moment last night :

It is a great experience to be fixing paraffin goodies on saved items

    From Last night

Radius 119 Ltd showing the way for its Younger friend that has just joined the fold

Nice hot tub with A Svea stove that was gifted from my late previous Boss

On closer inspection - My workspace looks totally in chaos

Suppose a case of the nutty professor -

I am sure that there are many here among us that suffer from a similar plight

The Find and Fettle Fever -

Most cases having 3 or 4 projects running at the same time does come with its own hazards

Mr. Beaumont, a chaotic workspace is a sign of an orderly mind! Tthe Radius 119 is one of my very favorite lanterns … strong, quiet, & built like a brick sh*thouse as we say hereabouts. And such good projects, too, because there are so many little things to get right. Well done.

    I also am over-the-moon about Primus 981s.

    Ulf.

    Greetings All

A few pics as we fettle along

Seems the scappers loosened off the raiser tube

    There is thread down below
Interesting vent holes inside the fount
Maybe a pressure baffle of sorts

    20230302_052626.jpg 20230302_052543.jpg

Not sure if this will seal without a little lead seam

Any advise welcome from the Radius King's

The usual issues in the fettle

Previous abuse of lead putty on the pump tube
    NRV came out without issues
Viton will replace the Cork pip

Pump tube re-inserted with some lite panel beating
Thereafter a good little sealing seam IMG-20230227-WA0047.jpeg

    Here the before

    20230302_054429.jpg

    During -panel beating needed

    20230302_055402.jpg

    Very happy with the result

After screwing in this fitting, it is soldered in place.

    In your experience

What's the reason of the inner baffel / splash plate where the pickup threads onto
    ?

I am guessing here. Maybe it is so that there is some distance between the thread and the top mating surface to give strength, then there is a hole in the chamber between to equalise pressure.

    NILS I tend to agree
    Definately provides strength

    As seen on other lamps
The top fount often gets bent or dented

Plus the added let's call it balast pressure chamber when the lamp is filled

It will overflow before the 2 holes allow and fluid in
Therefore there is always an air cushion to stabilise the pressure to gennie

    Yes Andrew

I have inspected my other Radius

    I noticed this "notch "

Maybe this eas a stress release change

Maybe some more knowledgeable folk can comment

Here the pic from Radius 2

    It's coming along nicely Warwick.
Thanks for the pictures of the fuel pickup. I assumed it was just a bush soldered into the top of the tank. But it's a lot stronger than I thought.

    Greetings again

A little fiddly fettle this am

As expected the pricker was broken

    No way of resurrecting

So the mind starts racing while scratching thru the parts box

    Then a lightbulb moment

Broken Petromax prickers have the same thread

So matched up a new plus old
    Slightly to long
So a little shave, and we good

The next step was a laugh a second

Trying to keep the hands and heat steady without buggering up anything

    Silver solder did the trick

    20230303_050439.jpg

    Shaved down

    20230303_050701.jpg

    20230303_060320.jpg

Needed to tidy up the triangles to round

    20230303_060404.jpg

Another benefit as I am sure you all do
    Never throw away anything

With the test on the jet bad news as the hole is blocked

    From experience
Do not use your completed work
Chances are you will bugger the pricker

So scratch in the parts stock

    Would you believe it
    Correct jet

    So for now

We got a little closer to a fire up

    Last task before work

Cut some leather and make up a pump part

Here I take the plunger apart

    Attach the leather
    Oil
Set it into a Primus blow torch tube

This can sit and form over the next few days

    Happy Fettling All

Greeting to thd Fellow folowers of light

Today's final fettle and the home stretch

Started with the pressure release valve
    Some nasty sealant in here
    20230304_092553.jpg

So got a good heat up and the a citric bath
While bathing made up new viton inner and outer seals

    20230304_094235.jpg 20230304_094325.jpg 20230304_094552.jpg 20230304_100455.jpg 20230304_100710.jpg

All channels cleaned up with my home made stainless cable and a hand drill

Still plenty carbon in all the usual places

Noticed also the eccentric gear was not traveling as it should
So a little attention down there aswell

    Learnt a little trick

Pressure release was tightened down with the normal Liberal smear of copper slip

Because I had reamed the channels I had the air gun out to blow away the fines

    So here the trick
    Finger on the gennie side
Airgun into the control valve hole

Good blow of pressure and Hallelujah
    Pressure release is burping perfectly

Next the new leather pump inserted and oiled

Copper slip on all the tighten down spots

Pressure test and dunk test came out perfect

    Tightened down all

Tied up an Atlas 300 cp mantle

Some spirits in the heater cup and on the mantle

    We are on fire

And now the moment that gives us all the rush we need

    Replay all the time spent

    Rethink all the steps

Hope like hell that you have not missed anything

Slowly turn the pricker down to set the mantle

    Then full Steam Ahead

    So here the money shots

    Before
A little sad lamp on death row

    IMG-20230227-WA0031.jpg

Now a bright shining light to keep on working as long as needed

With the obligatory care and Love

Ps for the purists #excuse my rudimentary pricker controls

    But hey it works

    Keep in hunting and saving
