I picked up a Dietz No 2 D-Lite for cheap. It was so filthy I could not see if I was making a mistake. However with steel wool, some emery paper and a brass brush it turned out great. the trouble was that I could not get it to raise to get the globe out. Frustration led me to vigorously shake the lantern and I was rewarded with a shower of dried wings and yellow jacket bodies Now I understood that someone had made a home in the upper part of my lantern With much twisting and pulling I was able to get to this That with the help of a screwdriver got me this And now I have this
You're lucky that the air tubes haven't been inhabited. It would have been difficult to get them completely free again.
I think that this style of lantern is a cold-blast lantern, so doesn't have air tubes running back down from the crown to the burner, as on my Chalwyn Pilot.
You are correct SJ. It is a cold blast lantern. We had gale force winds for a few nights starting on Halloween. I had 2 of my Dietz HY-Lo out, They are both hot blast . I clearly noted that even though they did not go out, they were pretty battered by 30 MPH winds. While my 2 cold blast railroad Vesta's shrugged it off. The difference that I have noticed with my very modest collection is that cold blast really smell of kero while the hot blasts are much less noticeable.
With the wick lanterns I find that it's a lot easier to control the flame on a cold blast over a hot blast. I can't say that I've noticed much of smell off the cold blast ones, and we have a couple of them lit every night in the bedroom. Maybe we're just used to it by now, we do have a CO detector in the room, just in case.
Good call on the CO detector. My youngest son is still at home and is always checking on me in my garage to see what I'm burning. It's my wife that is testy about kerosene odors. The temperature has dropped below freezing in the mornings here. I used to keep a Coleman 237 lite as it throws a massive amount of heat. Now I am using an Origo alcohol boat heater. the price of denatured alcohol is a crime in the Northeast USA
That is a nice looking lantern Those darned wasps eh? finding plenty of queens hibernating at the moment.. pulling on a pair of gloves yesterday and felt something soft at one of the fingertips.. ??? turned it inside out and out crawled a sleepy queen I made a big saving a little while ago buying a 5 ltr of alcohol based hand sanitizer to use as pre heat for lamps and heaters.. there are lots of different types so check manufacturers details first but it was way cheaper than buying methylated spirit thanks pb
My wife doesn't mind the smell at all. Fortunately, we don't get the extremes of temperatures that you get over the pond. Though I do remember that in the winter of 2010/2011 the temperature stayed below freezing for ten days in a row.! Good call on the hand sanitiser, I'll have a shufti at that the next time I have to buy some meths. I've still got to send off that control cock to you.
i should’ve said im not the one to ask? rather than saying ‘ i’m not sure’ that first one might be fine but i just don’t know.. sorry
I have found one that's 80% ethanol, but if I do get it, then I run up against the problem of not having anywhere to store it...
