Hi folks Whilst returning from an old fashioned pick-nick I had to carry out a jinking manoeuvre to avoid a driver with no understanding of lane control (his fault) which resulted in my paraffin can tipping and depositing a fair quantity of fuel in the footwell behind my seat (improperly secured lid and poor stowage -my fault). My question is simply how do I get rid of the smell? I have mopped up as much fuel as possible but the carpet was well saturated and the odour remains strong. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Regards Jeremy
How about a wet carpet cleaner, the type which wets the carpet with detergent solution and then vacuums it up again. Follow that up with a fan heater to help the carpet dry faster.

Remove the carpet and dry it under the Sun till the smell goes off. Otherwise, replace the carpet if you can. For the orther parts if your car, open the doors and windows. Smell should go off in a couple of days.

Sell the car. I’m sure I wouldn’t know anything about paraffin spillages on soft furnishings. But I’d guess if it was, say a cushion from... a caravan perhaps, you’d take it to the nearest water tap on the field at Newark and wash it down for about half and hour before taking it home in bin bags and leaving to bake in the conservatory for about 6 months. But as I say, I really wouldn’t know.
Hi Thanks folks for all The tips and advice, I’ll let you know how I fare! @Stuart Taylor I Tried this one the wife today. Do I need to update you on the situation? @Matthew92 I am really pleased you have not had this misfortune yourself. At least I have learned my lesson prior to Newark this year! Regards Jeremy Reason for edit: correction of predictive text.
At first I found predictive text a great help but as time goes by it gets more uncontrollable, more aggressive in its actions and far less useful. It now takes be twice as long to write anything on my phone as I have to check each word and then check the finished message thoroughly before hitting the send button!
@ColinG Usually my IPhone is not too bad but in this case it changed future to pass tense with out me noticing it. Regards Jeremy
I spill kerosene regularly on my boat. I have used two products to remove the smell: 1) Gas Off Odor Remover Spray 2) White vinegar. The white vinegar works so well I won't be buying Gas Off in the future. I usually have to wash the area 2-3 times then let it air dry good. After a through cleaning, when I put my nose close to the spill area there is no residual kerosene smell. This method works well with diesel too.
Yo ... you poor sod ... sell the car .. mate of mine had a gallon of Johnsons best full white gloss tip over in the boot of his beloved his Peugeot 3008 saloon car with 3,400 miles on the speedo .. wife not pleased ..Asdas monthly shopping all ruined .. took him at least a week attempting to clean out the boot and assorted paraphernalia , tools tyres carpets , wires , plastics all decorated and painted ..he used all known cleaning liquids/ lotions known to mankind ..I am not sure if he had a respray at a car panel / bodyshop in the end. fullers earth (ie good quality cat litter) to soak up and then chemical carpet clean with machine using hand wand attachment. easier if you can remove the carpets but can be done in situ. Mike
