Mid-winter has a special place for Antarcticans so I lit 2 ex-Antarctic Coleman 214s this evening to mark the southern winter Solstice. Happy mid-winter to our members in the South and happy mid-summer to the Northern colleagues. Cheers Tony
The shortest day and the longest night! But the coldest wettest part of the winter still lies ahead here and only in about two weeks time will the sun start to rise earlier again. Anyone versed in Astronomy care to explain the lag?
Gloriously sunny here in GL for the Summer Solstice - it can't last! There's a One-Day International between England and Australia being played about 2 miles away from here so they should get a full day's play. Hopefully we'll kick your arses again...
@phaedrus42 It’s to do with tilt of the earth and angle of the sun. The earth will continue to cool (as it does for about 1/2 hour after sunrise on a cloudless day) because the suns rays are to “shallow” to warm the earth surface. The solstice: Solstice - Wikipedia @David Shouksmith Cricket? What cricket? Is Australia playing something? Cheers Tony
A fine light up! Here in Shetland the weather had been fine for five weeks or so, but the Summer Solstice always brings flying gales and rain which knacker our gardens and this year is no exception, but that's life within the 60th degree of latitude!
Here in Sweden the sun never sets in the north, sun glasses on . Cricket game.......my oh my. Maybe we can spot that ten gallon tea pot . /Conny
@Tony Press looked like a lovely night, not dissembler to here that evening. @David Shouksmith Australia are quiet good at doing that to them self at the moment, Sorry Tony.Ever since us Kiwi's had to get down onto the ground to determine the pitch of the ball (underarm) I've had my doubts about my cousins across the ditch. hehe.the toad
Well, I didn't understand Digout's remark in the first place but I assumed it was a little Aussie 'banter' to a Pom, which is all in the game, naturally! Maybe you could explain it to this dumbass Englishman. Anyway, we still managed a 5-0 whitewash in the series despite giving them a chance by letting ourselves get to 27 for 4 at one point yesterday...
@David Shouksmith I think @Digout was referring to the deplorable action of the Australians using sandpaper to tamper with the cricket ball in South Africa. In case you missed it, both the Captain and Vice-captain have been suspended for 12 months (at least). Note that @phaedrus42 was very kind in not rubbing in our disgraceful behaviour when I visited him recently. Cheers Tony
Ah, I knew there'd been a little, er, 'local difficulty' in South Africa regarding ball-tampering by the Aussies and that two of them had been suspended but I wasn't aware of the details. It's been common practice over the years to polish one side of the ball and leave the other rough to encourage movement in the air, although that seems to have stopped lately. However, deliberately roughing up one side with sandpaper, well, it's just not cricket, is it. It's good to win - but not at any price...
@David Shouksmith Hubris... Polishing is one thing. Deliberately cheating is shameful and they deserved their sever punishment. But I also think forgiveness is a noble virtue, so I would like to see them back playing after they do their time. Cheers Tony
Yes I was being a bit flippant (and self Deprecating - Aussie wise) about the South African ball tampering incident. They were silly B..gers. Your right Tony, forgiveness is a good thing, and Toad certainly has a long memory, been to the chapel lately Toad?
Long memory, Ha.Anyway @Tony Press is a good chap, and I'm pretty sure he had nothing to do with that act. kind regards toad
