Hi there, I found a Roddy lantern. It's made in Hong Kong and looks identical to the Ash Flash 1020 lantern. Which leads me to believe this lantern comes from the same factory as the Ash Flash. The Roddy does have an added safety feature. The NRV is setup like a Coleman with the air tube positioned above the fuel line. The Ash Flash uses a Coleman style NRV but it doesn't have the Coleman setup because the Ash Flash NRV sits in the fuel so if the NRV starts to leak the fuel will start coming out of the pump tube. Very dangerous indeed. If anyone is interested to remove the NRV it takes a 7/16" socket. When I received the Roddy the first think I did was remove the NRV and found it wasn't working so I soaked it in Acetone for several day which did the trick and the NRV is working quite well now. Next the filler cap was rebuilt. The pump leather was in good shape but dry so it got soaked in Neatsfoot Oil for a couple of days and now it is good to go. The generator/vaporizer was in very good shape so nothing had to be done. I found a problem with the burner caps because these weren't the originals and one was missing it's burner screen so I found a burner screen for a Coleman 200 and had to resize it so it would work. Both burner caps were a bit too big so I solved this with a shim which has worked quite well. Both burner caps fit properly now. This Roddy lantern still had it's original glass globe which I'm assuming is not the normal but then I've never seen one of these before. The Roddy is very similar to the Ash Flash and Unimet in the fact it can be very exciting to fire up. Here's the lantern. Here are the action shots. Cheers, Norman
@george Thank you for your kind comments. @JEFF JOHNSON Thanks for the information and kind comments. Cheers, Norman
Roddy are a USA company that have made fishing reels from about 1958. Some of their reels were made in Japan with the Roddy name so guess they bought stuff in and put their name on it. They say they are an engineering firm but don't know if they would have had anything to do with the manufacture of this lamp.
This is Roddy model 2200WF. It screams Hong Kong to me and seems to be a pretty close clone of the AshFlash twin mantle lantern. ::Neil::
Hi Neil, I don't know where you found the model number because I couldn't find a model number, but it does say Hong Kong British Empire. Thank you for the information about the model number. Cheers, Norman
Hi Neil, Thanks for the information and model number. What you have pictured is in much better shape then the one I have. These Hong Kong lanterns do have their drawbacks but a preheat cup will remove some of those drawbacks. By the way I do like your Latin signature. Cheers, Norman
Sadly not everyone's, Neil - although the worst offender hasn't made an appearance here in recent months...
