Youre right, and the standard o-rings might not be as suitable as the original spares. I will order a couple of full service kits. I want to make this beautiful lamp shine again, bright and safe

    @JohnnyB

In which case the spring clip has stayed inside the knob, these are made of steel and can sometimes rust onto the cock shaft. You may be able to see it with a bright torch looking into the rear of the knob.

If the knob isn't falling off all the time then the spring clip must be in there. Sometimes they stick on the shaft, sometimes they stick in the knob and sometimes they come out and you see them. I've a feeling they were replaced by a short length of red plastic sleeve in the SP1 service kit...

Spring clip? Spring clip? Where is this spring clip you speak of?

    Hi,
Maybe, when the opportunity arises, someone can post a picture of this mysterious spring clip?

Do a search for 'SP1 service pack' and several threads will come up, one of which contains a picture of the "mysterious spring clip".

I'm sure I've seen at least one other type when I've removed these knobs...

David is right. The later Tilley control knob has a red plastic insert (shim), not the spring clip.

    Cheers

OK, I found a rusty spring clip now.

Is it possible to more demantle the cock?

With my limited knowledge I don't believe it is. As the internal workings are basically just a cam to lift and lower the cleaning wire, there are no internal seals. (I may get corrected on this!).

Give it all a good clean and assemble with fresh seals, that should do the trick.

Hi Johnny, Stevie is correct, no further dismantling required. A good wash in cleaner and a blow out with compressed air normally does the trick.....

Thank you Steve. Yes you're probably right, it was more for my curiosity and understanding.

Very nice! A good lamp to cut your teeth on.

Just wondering what your next lamp project will be.

In fact that's true, i'm very happy with the result.

    Thank you Pete.
Thank you Colin, I inherited the lamp from my late father.

    Thank you Jaco.

Thank you Jeremy. At the moment I am working on the restoration of a beautiful british road lamp, but it's not a pressure lamp. It's a Kenyons Akenco oil lamp with a Sherwood Vaporite brass burner and Serilight lenses. I can post some pictures if someone is interested on this project.

    Kind regards to all,
    John

Because it was in so a bad condition, the whole paint had to be removed. I'm still thinking about how I should paint the lamp heat-resistant?
    Kind regards, John

Good to see your lamp running, great job.

The road lamp is nice project and a rare model these days. Good luck, looking forward to the photoshop!
