As Pete mentioned buying wrecks is a good source of parts... The problem then is that you get tempted to try and get them all restored!
A case in point is the table lamp I recently chased down as it had an internal sprung gallery (btw, this meant nothing to me a few weeks ago). This part I needed for my wall lamp restoration. On picking up the table lamp I realised it was plated, including the gallery. The plated gallery wouldn't have looked right on the lacquered brass wall lamp, it also wouldn't have been right to separate the plated gallery from the plated lamp.
So, now I have an additional lamp in the collection rather than the part I needed for my resto.

The affliction? Not a chance of a cure it seems. The need to hear an old lamp pop in to life after a good fettle is far too addictive. I guess you already know the excitement of finding lamps.

You'll find all the parts you need either through other members or via the lamp gods at a car boot sale or similar. just needs a bit of patience.

When I find yet another lamp my other half looks at me with a sort of vaguely sympathetic look while gently turning her head from side to side as she walks away. I'm being unfair to her, she is starting to 'get' what it's all about. My only advice on that front is that you mustn't suggest that buying a rare Tilley in stead of going on holiday is a good idea. Just go somewhere where you're likely to find some nice old interesting lamp....

@BigStevie Wow you brought some memories flooding back, really good ones. You see, my wife actually introduced me to this hobby. About 4 years ago we were at a farmers market here in Toowoomba, just wandering around and she spied a complete but beat up Aladdin 1A Storm Lamp sitting amongst the bric a brac. Her words, not mine, “wouldn’t that be nice if you could get it going”. So we bought it for a song, and I can’t sing very well.
That’s when it started, the cleaning, the tinkering, hunting for parts and then the first light ......... I was hooked when the lamp popped into light, I was so hooked ...... Thank you for bringing back that memory ....... just what I needed.
    Cheers
    Pete

Hey Pete, thanks for that. I guess you'll keep hearing her words when you're out and about nosing around for a bargain... And when a lamp pops in to life! Good memories mate.

    @X246A Hey that looks tempting.
We lived in England, in Fleet Hampshire, between the years 1995 to 2000. Loved it, my daughter was born there, she's our little "Pommie". Haven't been back since 2014, could be time to do it again ........... :-k
    Cheers

If you could get your timing correct, a couple of weeks in the UK visiting old haunts and friends then a few nights with the lampies and stoves at Newark. It would be great to see you and yours and I’m sure a bit of camping gear could be scrounged from those attending locally.

@X246A Its not looking too good this time around.
I'm just going through the executing of Wendy's will, coz before I could do anything, car rego, bank transfers and house name transfer from joint names to my name I had to survive Wendy by 30 days. The 30 days are just up, Wendy passed 24/5/2019, so its all the official stuff now ........ bloody sh-t load of forms to be filled out for the Government.
However there's next year and that's a distinct possibility.
    Cheers
    Pete

Yes, I understand and should have remembered the rest of the post. My apologies.

Still, your lamprey family would love to see you in 2020.

If things run to plan then the dates for Newark will be 29-31 May 2020 although some early birds will start arriving from 25th. Ross @spiritburner should be able to confirm this.

Well, it's usually the final weekend of the school Whitsun half-term break but that can move depending on Easter and which L.E.A. it is - amongst other things. It's probably best to wait until the official announcement... :)

My comment was passing on what Ross mentioned at the end of the Newark meet this year.

Agreed, best to wait for the official announcement.

@Andy-H there be no cure. You just got to shoulder the affliction with stoicism. You just got to remember that we, the afflicted, are preserving a part of the past for those in the present, and in the future, can experience and enjoy. Just look at it as a calling, it helps, I’m not sure if your partner would agree, but stoicism and knowing you’re on a higher quest will get you through.

Trouble is it starts with £10 - £15 boot sale finds and once you get hooked you get a hankering for lamps costing several hundreds £££££££££'s

@george you gotta have dreams ....... someone said, “if you can dream it, you can achieve it”. Some of my dreams would get me into trouble, big trouble ....... I’ll leave it right there ..... ;)
