Interesting gadget !!

I found two of these yesterday when I was out "hunting" some sort of bracket to hold lanterns- pretty sure it is a boat accessory-for fishing at night ~~ I found the company online but they make no mention of these things-- probably don't make them anymore

Hope this works. Looks like it was mentioned in a 1987 issue of Field & Stream.

Took me a bit to realize how that'd work, then figured out that the gunnel of the boat would be vertical, and you just used the table as it was handy. In actual use the lantern would be pretty much right side up. I'm a bit slow, sometimes.
