Hi All, I have recently acquired my first Tilley lamp, an X246B from 1972. It is in excellent condition but I need to fit new seals all round. My query is with the horseshoe washer which retains the leather cup-shaped pump washer. Where does it locate? Does it clip around the threaded part of the plunger rod so that the nut clamps it to the shoulder or should it clip around the main diameter of the rod? Why a horseshoe shaped washer at all, why not a normal washer? Thanks in advance.

Welcome @R100 The horseshoe shaped washer is inserted after the leather cup and directly under the retaining nut. The slot in the washer allows air into the pump chamber on the up stroke (when the pump handle is pulled out). See attached PDF. Enjoy your lamp, just a hint, don’t over pressure it, 30 pumps or so on a full tank would be a good start. The X246B is prone to bulging the base, or “blowing” the base as we sometimes say. Wow! Many thanks for the welcome and the quick responses. I reckon I'm going to enjoy being on this forum. I already have the exploded diagrams but they are not clear on the precise assembly. However, I have been fishing around previous posts and along with you kind folk above, I understand the requirement for the cut out washer. As far as its location is concerned, it sits on the shoulder between the threaded and plain part of the rod. Is that right?
Yes. It sits where it fits behind the nut. If you assemble the whole pump, in the order shown, there’s only one way for it to sit. It’s not forced on. Tony
