I bought a 246 all brass flat cage short handle for £80 a while back and at the time that was the most I'd paid for a lamp (Aww bless) a quick browse of that well known auction site this evening and my jaw dropped at prices over £200 and then unbelievably over £300 for that same lamp. I kid you not. Thoughts?

I'm glad that I started collecting lamps etc., when I did, (about 25 years ago).

In my sort time of collecting I’ve seen prices fluctuate widely, but the trend seems to be they’re on the rise.

As a new collector what gets me is the range of prices for the same lamp. Definitely a case of buyer beware.

Likewise, being fairly recently infected I’m still trying to get to grips with what appears to be very wide ranging prices. Rare models are certainly on the up and I think for many of us, out of reach now.

On the plus side, there are still some bargains out there if you spend the time to look. Putting the time in does bring results.

Totally agree. I find the best bargains in local vintage outlets or FB marketplace but occasionally even Ebay. If you're at all into Coleman lamps the dedicated Coleman FB groups are full of people willing to trade for Tilleys, Vapalux etc.

I am generally watching a Swedish auction site. There are always a constant flow of lamps coming through.
Last Summer it absolutely went mad with Asian buyers. Several guys from Taiwan especially were buying anything and everything.
Over the winter is calmed down and I don't see the same buyers anymore.

Prices still high. Nothing much below 60 euro. Some real old tat goes for far higher

If you have the money you buy your collection together.
That is what, I think, is happening with asian buyers.

    AIDA1250 nos, goes for 700euro.

I agree with everything said already, including the bargains are still about comment. I’ve just bought a 73 246B completely intact, jar, heater & funnel in its box, not a scratch, for £33 and a DN250 iron for £4.99. But saw an iron on the bay this weekend for £40

Some of the descriptions can be a bit off as well. There was a Tilley FL6 for sale earlier in the year, claiming to date from World War 1 :-k

If the seller gets this price, I have the potential to be a rich man. I have a few of these...

Or you could buy direct from Tilley and re-sell. ](*,)

    Cheers

I think that the seller may have hit the 4 twice when he typed the price of 42.99 and got 442.99. Also it shows that he doesn’t proofread his work.
    Just saying......

    GBP 4.99 would seem reasonable.

On THIS one, I would offer $99.99, the same price as what is on the tag.
I'm sorry, but there is no way THIS is worth C$319. I'd probably offer them C$70 for it, but then I don't really know what common prices are for lanterns yet.
For C$6263, I could buy a fairly decent used car

Checking out eBay, and the Japanese really seem to over price their lanterns by about 2 digits. One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six,
There is no way a 2 year old lantern is worth US$798
I have a 1973 321 Blue lantern, I should say it is coming from Japan so I can ask $655 for it!

There is no way THIS 1960's red Coleman 200A lantern is worth the US$256 asking price. I'd offer him like $10 for it as that is what I picked up mine for. People on ebay have lost their minds!

Oh, I've seen them go for more than that!
And some Primus lamps with original shades has gone for around 14.000 kronor (almost $1500).

Just an idea to not post links to auctions, since they not have a long life, but to copy* the image of the lamp here. This way this topic keeps its value longer.

    * richt mouse click on image, copy image location, open image pic in toolbar above and paste the link.

Here you go @WimVe . I was bidding on an Optimus 253 a few months ago. Price went bananas.
The original globe looked very nice

Gumtree is getting almost as bad (apart from the absolute bargains I have advertised of course). Some woman near Glasgow has some Tilley stuff listed at the most ridiculous prices, I was tempted to message her to say what I thought of her but refrained. Wonder how much interest she’s had in her adverts.

hhhmm, maybe an addition to keep it clean: only the picture of the item ? not of the omplete auction page ?
Btw: it's just an idea !

Found this CUSTOM COLEMAN LAMP LANTERN PARTS CABINET FILLED WITH NOS PARTS on eBay. Here are some pictures from the listing. It is a nice cabinet and everything, but I think that US$650 (C$865) + shipping is a bit much for it. Has 8 offers on the listing, but he declined every one of them.

What would you pay for something like this?

That cabinet is way overpriced. Firstly it is a custom cabinet not an original Coleman cabinet. Secondly there is around $400 of parts in there at best (discounting the decals which the seller produces).....say $300 worth of generators and $100 for the rest. Regarding the generators - half of them you cannot see, so I hope there is a detailed inventory. No point in ending up with gens that you have no use for. Having said the above it is a nice looking cabinet and would be great for storing parts.

That is a reasonable assortment of generators - particularly as you are based in Canada ( ie some of the gens would be useful as you are more likely to find lanterns that us them in Canada).
I still think it is overpriced for what you are getting. With parts you need to be patient - you will find none for months on end and then you will score a small pile of them at a great price. Being in Canada you need to hit old hardware stores, camping stores, tackle shops etc and ask if they have any old Coleman parts. Swap meets are also good as is developing relationships with fellow collectors. Lots of us buy old junkers (trashed lanterns) so we can source parts from them if/when required. Some collectors have very impressive bone yards ie unlimited replacement parts sourced from $5 junkers. A trashed Coleman 335 (common in Canada) may yield a fuel cap, complete valve, ventilator, complete pump, generator, vent nut, burner frame etc - so for $5 you may end up with $100 worth of parts (if you had to buy them new).
