Hi All Need to fit a leather pump washer on a 300x whats the best stuff to lubricate a new leather please? Thanks!
@plantpot Welcome to the forum. I originally used olive oil but, in the last year, I have changed to neats foot oil. I believe the beats foot oil is actually slightly better, this is subjective though. Cheers Pete
I don't think I can get the foot oil here, so olive or 3 in one it is. I have been cleaning up a 300x just waiting on the washers, and just got my second one to bring back from the dead. Thanks folks for making me welcome. Great forum.
Thanks Tony... Yep, looks like you can get it here in the UK. Amazon do it and looks like you get it from the horsey set shops.
I think I may well have, I am amazed by how the Bialaddin 300x has come up, took a lot of work with scotchbrite wheels, and wire wool. Managed to dismantle it and bash out the crooked bottom cage part. The whole lamp gallery had a list to it and a ding on the fount. Now to replace washers and the pump leather etc and check for leaks. I have another 300x due in. I really like the design of the 300x series out of all of them I have a 1970s 2 mantle coleman, and Tilly that are up and running with a bit of work, I just love the things
@plantpot Regarding this post by @phaedrus42 the use of olive oil is not particular good for leather. Personally I use normal machine oil. Michael
@cmb56 and @plantpot This is one of the reasons I changed from olive oil to neats foot oil. Plus neats foot oil is from the hooves of the cow that the leather is made from ...... just seems to go together Cheers Pete
Thanks Folks Today I managed with some effort to remove the 300x control cock bakelite and brass "V" knob... what a sweat even with wd40. I need to replace the gland o ring. Also removed the non return valve, that almost fell out. I was lucky on that I think Waiting now for the washer set in the post.
Here is the original as delivered before doing anything: I am sure you have seen all this before right!
Looks to be a good, serviceable lantern. First thing to do is check the fount/tank holds pressure and dowsn't have any hairline stress cracks.
Provided there are no stress cracks this will be a good fettling project. Many a dirty and cruddy lamp has been reborn. Enjoy the fettle. Cheers Pete
I keep saying this but WD40 is not a penetrating/easing fluid. It's a water dispersant which happens tp have some lubricating qualities but as a penetrator it is average at best. Best by far is a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. This easily outperforms all commercial easing oils. ::Neil::
That"s good to know, ATF? Auto Transmission Fluid? I have just bought a bottle of acetone. I have heard of people preening the tiny hole in the vapouriser tube, what does this mean exactly? Cleaning it or making the hole larger? If I have read it right if you get a corona effect around the flame on the mantle the hole needs preening. What do you use for this? Thanks
Peening, in this case, is gently tapping the hole to make it smaller (to avoid over-fueling, which leads to corona around the mantle, or black mantle disease). It can be a fraught process! Tony
I tried peening on a Tilley vaporiser with an enlarged jet and it did work... but only after I'd worked out what was meant to happen. The thing is, one wrong hit and you could close the hole completely. Oh, and you need a ball pein hammer to do it. I polished the rounded end to make sure it made smooth dents.
From the Wikipedia's quote on the neatsfoot oil, there's another called the neatsfoot oil compound. Its described as a blend between pure neatsfoot oil and mineral oil. Some could be adulterated with vegetable oils. And it was described that the addition of mineral oil could speed up the leather's deterioration. And even pure neatsfoot would eventually oxidize and its meant for leather that's frequently used/handled, not so much for restoration of old ones. Seems to appear a little contradictory to our general opinions on mineral engine oils.
Thanks for the info MYN, Peening with a ball hammer sounds very interesting, I know it would make for a very educational video. Has anyone done it?
There's bound to be a video online showing the peening (peining?) but probably not specifically inrelationto enlarged Tilley/Bialaddin vaporisers.
