I've got a 220 with a 'woomph stick' and when it works it's really useful but it's damned scary! It also goes through flints like you wouldn't believe!
@ColinG I’ve yet to see one in real life let alone in the wild. I’ve heard about them and thought it was an aftermarket add on or some such thing. Was yours issued with the woomph stick from Coleman? Cheers Pete
I dunno, it just came like it. The problem is it can take a few quick flicks to get enough sparks and by that time the fuel vapour can build up quite a bit making the eventual ignition pretty eventful! I mostly use a long neck lighter now as I'm not as young as I once was!!! EDIT: eventful = terrifying!
Its the Coghlans lantern lighter. Works with flintstone as in Zippo. Can be scaring with huge flames. Depends.
Just looked at the video of a Cooglans Woomph stick in action posted by @bp4willi. Looks easy and seems to work OK. Interesting, however and I can see why it’s called a woomph stick or a bang stick. Cheers Pete
Interesting item, similar to Campingaz igniters. I might not follow the 'pump hard, shake vigorously' method on my Coleman, I can see the mantle ending up as dust inside the glass

Yes, what’s with the shaking the Coleman lantern in the lighting procedure? Is it a necessity or is it a strange ritual. I’ve never seen this done before to light a lamp. Cheers Pete
When shut-off valve is opened for start only 1/4 turn, mainly air escapes from the fount through the nozzle. To enrich that air with a bit more gasoline fume, for easier lighting, I shake the lantern. Helps vaporizing a bit of fuel in the tank. Helps avoid large Flames on one end or unwillingness to ignite on other end. Easy Startup. :-)

Yes I have done this. Shaking the lantern splashes fuel up and into the air intake of the pick up to give a richer start burn. Sometimes if an Instant-Lite isn't performing well that splash of fuel can make a lamp run right for a minute and if it does that then that is a good indicator that the fuel/air pick up needs attention. ::Neil::
@Mackburner Lantern starts as well without shaking. But better/simpler with shaking. I think this is as well dependent on the gasoline used. If its Coleman fuel, or unleaded, or cleaning gasoline or acetone-free Brea cleaner, or lab due or ..... All of these will have slight variances in viscosity , flaming point, etc. So I wouldn't check airtube now.
