Hi, all! I am looking at an old Petromax 828 300HK at a local auction site, and the globe is missing. I am considering buying it, as I can get it fairly cheaply, but I need to know I can get a replacement globe easily. Can I simply get any Petromax 350CP globe, and it will fit? came across a thread where a similar lamp was shown with what looks like an aftermarket globe (it's named 828 350CP. Is that the same as the 828 300HK I am looking at?): Brightest lamps? Cheers, Håkon
It may be listed as 300 H.K. or 350 C.P. but it's still an 828. Yes, I would think the newer glass would fit, in fact, if it fits a 829 Petromax it will fit your lantern. The 828 and 829 are basically the same lantern. The only real difference is the nozzle and needle cleaner, the rest is just cosmetic.
@HaakonJ CP stands for Candle Power and HK stands for Hefnerkerze which more or less is the same. As have been said, the 828 is a 350 CP/HK lantern and the 829 is a 500 CP/HK lantern, both with quick starter. A 826 is a 828 without the quick starter. The only differences are the nipple/jet and the needle and of course the name tags. A new glass/chimney can be bought from Petromax for €9.79. The glass on lanterns is sometimes called a chimney. Thanks for clarifying! So a general rule of thumb is simply that all 350 or 500 CP lamps will fit the same glass?
If you get a glass which is oversize and often now they are which means the glass chimney will not fit I suggest taking some metal from the inner top of the cage with a file / small sand wheel around its entire inner circumference until you make it fit.... I have done this a couple of times without any problems at all .. ok you are loosing that small amount of metal , but the older glass chimney seem to be a tad smaller than the new... and also harder to find ... just a thought for you... I fitted a Schott Suprax glass chimney lamp for an Anchor 950 .. onto a Anchor 909 by this method. It would not fit at first when I received it ..
@Tony Press Should probably have mentioned it, but yes, I was thinking about Petromax for that rule of thumb. @Alby Great tip, thanks! Will keep it in mind. Thanks to all who contributed here. I think I will go ahead and buy this lamp. Can get it for about $25 (USD) plus another $10-20 for the spare glass. Seemed to be in good condition otherwise. Cheers, Håkon
If it is marked with HK it is an early lantern > old one. Glass new are around the 10euro mark. Update: 9.80 If buying try to get an age matching logo which I assume would be E&G.
Just an update. The lamp turned out to be in need of a generous amount of TLC. Everything you see in this image was inside the tank . I had wiped off the wooden plate prior to pouring/shaking out the content of the tank. Needless to say, the tank needed a thorough cleaning. The long pricker rod was completely seized up with carbon deposits, and was twice as thick as it should be. Further disassembly showed that almost all parts needed to be cleaned/serviced. I have no idea how this lamp was (mis)used! Received the spare globe, which is only a modern "Schott Suprax - Made in Germany". Was not able to find the original globe. You can (barely) see the replacement globe in the first picture in the lamp reference gallery thread: Petromax Rapid 828 300 HK - 1940 Again, thanks for the help with the replacement globe. Maybe I'll get lucky and find an original globe down the line.
