Hi fellas, over the past few months may be more, as i have dismantled fettled a continual line of lanterns, i have come across the pips made of what looks to be cork, more so in the older lanterns,
Was this or is this common practice for lanterns of age. This one came out of a Aladdin 14A im working on 1930's? 20190909_210815.jpg
    Excuse my grubby fingers

Yes cork was commonly used and they worked pretty well. By the time we get one it is getting to be pretty old though and nearly always has to be replaced. ::Neil::

Modern cork gasket material has a lot of nitrile in it or binder which dissolves out. Best replaced with something decent unless you can get pure cork of the right density.

Yes, cork.. I have a Petromax 821 made around 1939, and sure enough it had the original cork NRV! Believe it or not the thing is still in the lantern and still working! I guess, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" [-X:D

Correct and sometimes you can use the other side.
    Drop of oil and go.
