Just starting on another Tilley fettle from my Bulk Purchase and trying to find out a bit about it. I have done some research here on CPL and I "think" that this is a circa 1954-56 X246 because: No date stamp on the base plate The old tank emblem under the pump But all the pictures I have seen so far have the base plate "Made in England" on a single line, this one has it in a circular shape. Also - on the photo below - you will see the Made in England inscription, but just near that is the single letter "P", with no other numbers/letters, although possible concealed by a spot of corrosion, but I don't think so. Can anyone assist with comments as to model/age? Thanks heaps.
I would agree with the date, maybe late in the run. The bail arm locating in 'tags' as opposed to 'ears' or 'lugs' on the earlier models. As for the 'P' the question is still out there...... I believe only the ability of time travel will allow the mystery of the letters Tilley added to the date code to be answered.
This one is interesting because there is a letter, but no date code - I've not seen that before in my research. .....not that I am all that experienced. No doubt a few on here have seen it before....
Tilley started to date their tanks around the Autumn of 1956. So your lantern has to be earlier and your estimate of the date is close enough. That is a well built lantern and it should clean up just fine.
