I’m assuming this is an IL33, I bought it at the weekend along with the AL15. Has the Tilley shield, 12” reflector, old brass control cock. Is the gallery correct for this age model?
What? You just happened to find another rare old original lamp? Not green, not green at all, I’m fine, really okay..... Seriously, that’s a very original looking lamp, well done Jean, as to the gallery, the more learned members will have to help there. In awe, Stevie
Yes Jean. Early IL33s in the 1920s had a brass hood/gallery like that which by the late 1920s and early 1930s was in enameled steel like yours. Sometime in the early to mid 1930s that type of gallery was replaced with the table lamp gallery with a cone as Anthony showed. So you have a nice early 1930s IL33 in original condition. ::Neil::
@Anthony The gallery you showed above has the cone; the gallery/hood that Jean has is correct (earlier, as Neil said) but it was not fitted with a cone). Tony
That brass cone was used on all the do nuts that used the table lamp gallery so all of them from the mid 1930s onwards. It is nearly always missing when you find a do nut because it is not fixed so drops off easily and the lamps run fine without it. I have never seen an enamelled one but the brass types go black with use and maybe yours is just discoloured from long term use. ::Neil::
@Jean J The brown hood is a TW Sands (Australia) reproduction. My understanding is that Tilley hoods have white enamel on their inner surfaces, and Kayen hoods do not. But, anyway, the brown hood in my photo above is neither, having been made for/by TW Sands along with reproduction hoods for Tilley/Kayen EX100-type lanterns well after they were out of production by Tilley and Kayen. This one (above) was Jim Dick’s. Cheers Tony Edit: I’ll post some of these reproduction hoods in the Gallery.
@Jean J Your black enameled cone is from a 500 cp burner. See here : Tilley 500cp., do-nut lamp Henry.
That is what I've always thought too Tony but never felt 100% sure that is correct. We get a lot of reproductions here in Australia because of the Kayen market as well as the Tilley. Do others agree with the rule of white on the inside is Tilley otherwise Kayen or reproduction ??
