I might buy a AL620 lamp but it has no globe. So I’m wondering if these can be bought. Or maybe some other globe would fit?

Missing the bug screen that goes under the globe also.

@Doug Yes, globes - PART 182 are available. Sometimes listed as Tilley onion glass / globe / shade on eBay, or look here www.base-camp.co.uk/tilley.html

The control cock on that lamp is missing the knob.

    Hi Doug,

I'm very envious because I've been wanting one of these Tilley AL-620 lanterns for quite some time now.

The glass globe is still available. You will need to look for the Tilley 182 type glass globe. These 182 type globes do show up here in the US but in most cases you will have to find one in the UK. The best place to find this type of glass globe is on ebay.

You can also check if any of our members has an extra 182 globe.

    Cheers,
    Norman

Two other questions. Are the Korean 182 globes ok? I see them on eBay.
Also, what mantles are used on the AL 620 ?

I have no experience with the Korean globes so I can't comment on them. The AL620 uses a standard Tilley 164 mantle.

The various Korean globes I’ve bought over the years are fine.

Standard onion globe as fitted to most of the Tilley table lamps. The Korean globes are generally good quality but not marked in any way. You'll save yourself a few bucks, however, given the choice I"d buy a good used original if one presents itself. Mine is my current favourite. IMG_20190905_183303882.jpg

I do like that AL-620. These appear to be quite rare.
Did many or did any get to Australia?
    Cheers

I can only speculate that as a railway inspection lamp this would be outsold 500:1 compared to a mainstream 246b of the same era and the purchase of such a lamp would have depended upon state railway appropriation (utility services?) buying habits. If you've never seen one in Australia then chances are they were never sold there.

Seems to work ok. I bought a onion globe but that will take a while to arrive.
Is it common to get a 5 sec flame up when these a fired up? 7D6690BA-0A9F-49B3-8623-4F452237A466.jpeg

I see you do not have the tilley pre-heater. Try pre-heat twice, or thrice with your wick torch around and resting on collar of the vaporiser

Looks like a nice lamp..no it should light like any other Tilley, what were you using on the pre-heater? Methylated spirits do burn hotter and therefore are preferable to most 'other' fuel types.

I’m using denatured alcohol for preheating.
What is the light up sequence ?Pump first or preheat first. As you can see from the photos I’m doing something wrong.

@Doug L WOW ! I can't believe instruction 2 on the side of the font. "pump air into container until air pressure pin comes flush with top." ??? Tilley lamps, lanterns, heaters (laundry) irons do not like a lot of pressure when lighting. So preheat first. There are as many ways to light a Tilley as there are ways to boil an egg - everyone has their own interpretation of the instructions - but usually, wait until the flame from the torch has died down to the point where it's just licking the bottom of the mantle before adding pressure.

Pre heat first then slowly add pressure, if it burner is not hot enough it is easier to release the little pressure you have put in than to hope your control cock seals and you wait for the pressure to hiss out through the loosened pump.
Or follow the Tilley instructions and risk a small flare up. In the end find what you're comfortable with.
