Anyone here knows or heard talking about the sigaret brand Camel had their nam inscripted on the hat of an Optimus 1200 lamp? Some sort of marketing action? Regards, Ton.
New one on me... Camels are an American brand so not sure why they would be on Swedish lantern. Interesting, though... a British brand cigarette was associated with the Bialaddin lanterns. I think they were Rothman, or something like that. Coupons of some sort... Smoke a couple hundred packs and you get a Bialaddin lantern to set by your night stand in the cancer word....

The Camel logo was used for the Camel Trophy during the 1980s and the Camel shop offered a 500cp Petromax type lantern which had the Camel logo on the hood cap. I was not aware they had also marketed a 250cp lantern but it seems very possible. Can we have some pictures please. ::Neil::

The globe/glass is upside down. If you look at the lantern and esspecially the top the text CAMEL is upside down. The picutere you took shows the far side of the lantern. Even if you turn the lantern around with the text in front of you it is upside down. If I turn a Petromax lantern around with the text towards me I can read the text.
Interesting. The Camel Trophy lantern I know of is a Geniol and this is clearly an Optimus. There is a Camel brand lantern found in Thailand but they are Aida copies so again not the same. The letter style suggests the American brand and perhaps this was also a Trophy promotional piece. Thanks for the images. ::Neil::
Could the lanterns been part of the Camel Trophy expedition kits? For years Land Rover provided vehicles for the Camel Trophy, normally an vehicle expedition to a remote part of the world involving multi-national teams, good lanterns would have fitted this brand/expedition.
The lanterns were sold by The Camel Shop. They certainly sold a 150cp Geniol and a 500cp Petromax type. It is very possible they sold other brands as well. If you do a google search for Camel Shop Expedionslampe several will turn up. ::Neil::
Camel, like many other sigarette brands, used advertising to suggest you could be a cowboy, a sailor or whatever adventurer. Possibly a focal point for the ladies as well, as long as you would light up their smokes. That link with adventure was also expressed with goods as Mackburner suggested. At one time (end 70's) this tempted us to approach them with a sponsorship deal, or rather question, us being a four-man team in parachuting. They declined politely, probably for the better!
