I am anxiously awaiting my first Tilley (I pick it up on Sunday), and I want to know if I can use a Coleman accessory on a Tilley. Many years ago I picked up adapters that enable the user to use CO2 cylinders to pressurize a Coleman lamp or stove. I really like them because the eliminate all pumping until the tank is dry What I'm wondering is if the Tilley fuel cap threads are the same as those that Coleman used? I suspect that Tilley threads are pre-metric, so that's not an issue. rsvp
I think you will find they won't fit. Actually it is probably not a good idea anyway unless you can regulate the pressure to around 30psi. Coleman tanks will stand a deal more pressure than a Tilley. ::Neil::
It might be OK. I have never seen or used one of those but the cartridge CO2 can't give a huge pressure. In the UK soda syphons were cartridge pressurised and they were a glass container. Might be worth finding out what the end pressure actually is before rejecting the idea. ::Neil::
Hi There, I have always wondered if the the CO2 refills actually worked with Coleman Petrol Lanterns. Given the " Instant Starting " feature relies on drawing a mixture of air and fumes from the font what happens when you draw co2 and fumes. Co2 is non combustible so you are relying on the air intake for oxygen. Does the co2 in the fount negate the Instant starting or just inhibit it a bit? Colin
The CO2 system works very well! The function of the compressed gas in the font is only to push the fuel out into the generator. None of the gas in the font is aspirated into the burn mixture. The draft (draught) created by the hot mantle against the air tube is what creates the the necessary air/fuel mixture for combustion. I've noticed that some folks think that adjusting the brightness of a pressure lantern saves fuel. It probably doesn't since the adjustment only adjusts the amount of air in the combustion mixture. The richer mixture does not burn as well and results in a dimmer mantle. I've found that some of my quick-start lanterns were improperly adjusted by previous owners and could be much much brighter by reducing the amount that the generator tip blocks the draft in the riser tube. Good question!
I am now a Tilley owner, and one of the first things that I checked was the compatibility between a Coleman and a Tilley fuel cap. No joy Photos attached for your consideration.
