Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself, before I start getting too heavily involved in researching the forums and asking silly questions! I'm a Scout Leader who has only become interested in pressure lamps and stoves in the last 18 months or so. However, I'm now the proud owner of 3x Guardsmans, 1x X246A, 18x X246Bs, 6x Pressure stoves of various models, 3x Blowlamps and a couple of non-pressure paraffin lamps, so I may have caught the bug badly... I've got various queries about things like what causes orange flames instead of white flames, how to seal a suspected leaking tank, how to date the lamps when there are no date stamps, etc. I'm sure the answers are nested in the Forums here somewhere, but wanted to say hi to you all first, before I go searching! Also, if any of you have any tips on involving youths in fettling and similar, my scouts would be interested in getting much more involved. With the price of CampingGaz being what it is, I'm making the move to Tilleys and pressure stoves to keep costs down. I'm self taught at present, but would gladly take any advice on improvements I could make. I'll try and post some of my fettling accomplishments in due course, when I tear myself away from my workshop! Best wishes, Faulkner
@Oliver Hi Faulkner, welcome from Queensland Australia. It sounds like you have the affliction ...... This forum is filled with friendly knowledge and practical advice, all you go to do is ask. I’m looking forward to seeing your posts and of course your lamp pictures. Cheers Pete
@Oliver Welcome to the forum. I have run several fettling nights with my Venturer Scouts (14 - 17 yo) over the years. Split them into small groups and give each group a lantern or stove to work on. Some have bought in a lantern, stove or blow torch from the back of the shed at home.
@Oliver Welcome to the forum from a fellow Scout Leader. Myself and two other Leaders in East Sussex visit local groups to demonstrate how to service and safely use Tilley and Bialaddin lamps (and the occasional stove or blow lamp) , Bournemouth may be a little far, but you never know..... its only a couple of hours away. That being said we try to have a gathering once or twice a year open to all. The answers to your questions can be found here along with many fellow Paraffinologists willing to give advice, delve into the forum's pages and ask the questions. Based on your lamp list...... I can happy confirm you are definitely infected with 'the bug'.
@Oliver Welcome to the forum. Many of us cut our teeth on pressure lamps and stoves whilst camping. In my case it was at the Norfolk St John Ambulance Country Cadet Camps in the late 1970’s and 80’s. Regards Jeremy
