Hi All! Ive just pulled apart my dodgy burner from my 246, Looking at it seems ok to me but i have no idea what to look out for? Can anyone tell me what to look out for please? Basically it will fire up bright then slowly dim Thanks Adam
Hello Adam, have a look at the small holes around the base of the burner, if they have merged or almost merged into each other then the burner is burned out. If they are still okay, then it may be that there is muck inside the mixing dome, or that the mixing tube which is inside the mixing dome has come loose. Burners can be difficult to take apart, the last one which I took apart I had left soaking in vinegar for 3 days, the fluid gradually eats though all of the carbon and other muck and the parts unscrew. Some folk use heating with a blowlamp and quenching in water to loosen the burner parts. Jeff.
Hi Jeff, I took apart mine easily as i bought it off base camp a few months ago but the holes are nearly merging into one, Inside was a bit dirty but not all tight, spigot was a bit loose though, Never seem to have luck with the 246 burners, tempted just to buy a 246B burner. Cheers Adam
Hello Adam, all parts of the burner have to be properly tightened before it will work properly. Perhaps you could post a photo of the burner base, so that I and others can see if the burner is to far gone. If it is, then keep all of the parts except the burner body, as they will come in useful through time. I buy up rough lanterns just to strip them for parts, if you can get a Tilley lantern of any period for under £15 and it has a decent glass, then in my opinon it worth buying, Jeff.

Hello Adam, it's been well used. I give old burners the blue flame test, this means that mantles are not wasted. Put the burner back together tightly, then put it on a vapouriser which is in a tank which has paraffin in it. Put a little pressure in the tank and pre-heat in the usual way, if the burner gives a steady blue flame all the way around, then there is still life in it, if not, then it's still of use for parts. If the one you show is burned out, the one I have is no better. Seems to me that there is still good separation wall-thickness between the holes. If you have tried a replacement vap tube, was it a proven good one? If it was an old one, but worked on another lamp, it may just be a combination of old burner/old vap tube/ so you just keep trying till you get it working. Steve.
Hello Adam, try 10 pumps to start with and once the meths torch has done it's job, move it up to within an inch or so of the burner. That will keep the flames from stretching and going out before you get a chance to view them, Jeff.
I have never yet managed to restore a Tilley burner. When they die of old age they are dead. Taking them apart and cleaning does not help and in fact can sometimes make matters worse because the threads have burnt away and the bits won't screw in again tight. Try it on a vaporiser that you know works well and if it is still poor then it is display quality. ::Neil::
