Was watching this on flea bay of late now sold but what is it ?
    (a) a special from Tilley factory
    (b) an adaption by importer for railway or other special customer
    (c) a home made modification
It is an EX4 lamp with a well designed & made frame to hold a reflector, the handle may get a little warm ?

Whatever it is, it has been made nicely. Even so, fixing the upper handle to the reflector is questionable; presumably that is the reason for the reinforcement on both sides where the reflector is fixed to its bracket.

Perhaps used as a reflector to beam the light. When the bowl still had reflecting property that is.

    @Graham P
Now that’s an interesting one indeed.
The fount only has the 2 studs, other than the PL range and EX100 types, I haven’t seen this type before. Further the studs appear to be upright and at the edge as in the usual Guardsman 4 stud varieties. It also has the looks of a manufactured efficiency instead of a cobbled up home type production. It looks to be very well made and I would love to know it’s origin and story.
    Cheers

The tank is early because it has what appears to be a pressure release and an XN., control cock, the sockets for the handle are positioned as they are on the 1920's and 1930's lanterns and the first link below shows one of those.

It's a simple task to bore a hole in the rim of the tank for securing the handle.

Tilley did attach a handle to the top of the R-2 and the second link shows an example.

In my opinion, this is an after market adaption, which was done by a skilled metal worker and was probably made for a specific task.

The upright part of the frame should have a lock nut where it fits over the bolt.

    PL52, with a plated hood.

    TILLEY R2.

Although it looks well made, the burner seems to be too lower for the reflector, very little light from the mantle would shine on the top half to be reflected :-k

I actually like it, both for its unusuallity, do you like that word? ....... and it’s adaption to a purpose. Worthy candidate for any lantern collection, me thinks.

Very interesting setup. I like it very much.
It also has what looks to be a pressure release which is always a very good idea.

Thank you for sharing this lantern/heater with us.

    Cheers,

Tony,I can only repeat what has already been said.
Home made adaption on an EX4.
Reflector is not from a Tilley or a Kayen because it is smaller, more pointed and the cutout is different.
Pricker knob would be a bit awkward to get to as well.
Well made with good thick brass.
Not a perfect design but I like the look of it too.

Graham said the handle may get a little warm and I think that may be an understatement :)
