Can someone please tell me am i the only idiot that finds it hard to get the pricker wire/needle inside the vaporiser after pulling it out, even with a new vaporiser i find it hard to put the wire in first go, it seems to catch every time on something and needs fiddling around with to get it fully in.

Im scared I might blunt the tip, of the pricker, even on new vaporises I encountered this problem, is there a trick to putting the wire in first go.

    Thankyou in advance.

It’s a matter of fiddling around, quietly twirling and gently pushing...

    Cheers

Thankyou Tony, can i ask what makes the wire catch and on what, also even if your gentle twirling it around and push gently wont this make the pricker tip blunt. Is there a trick to putting the wire back in, even on an unused vap it bloody catches.

There is a crimp near the top and inside there a washer with a small hole and above that under the tip a spring. So you can damage the tip by proding the wire up there too hard. Tilley advised that the wire should not be removed unless absolutely necessary. ::Neil::

I just turn the vapouriser upside down and put the pricker wire into it and then gently shake the vapouriser and the pricker wire falls into place.

I have setup an old table lamp so i can test old used vaporises to see if they work.

Now can i fill the tank with methylated spirit’s or anything else other then kerosene. I find Kero to hard to clean up due to its oil

Also will anything else other then Kerosene rust the internal structure of the vaporiser when im testing then to see what works.

Last of all what should i be looking for, when i turn the cock/valve off no seeping of paraffin coming through the tip ?

Should squirt straight up with forced, and not on an angle ?

Am i missing anything else, and can i test then with out the burner on, or do i have to burn them for 20 mins.

Was hoping they can be tested without burning as i have 30 that need testing.

If the vaporiser is stuffed do i keep the prickers, or if the hole is enlarged dose that mean the needle is stuffed as well.

    Regards
    Darren

If you’re worried about rusting the inside of your vapouriser, don’t use metho. Stick to kerosene and do it outside.

Seeing fuel come out the jet is only one indication of its usefulness; and no indication that the jet has not been enlarged.

Testing a vapouriser requires it to be tested in a fully functional burner with a mantle. You need to see whether it is flaming outside a well shaped mantle. Nothing less will show that the vapouriser is working properly.

The “Bunsen flame” test (low pressure without a mantle) is a halfway test to see if the vapouriser and/or the burner is ok, but you need a good burner and a mantle for the “proof” that your vapouriser is fine.

With the cock turned fully to the right, there should be no leaks anywhere.

    Hi Darren,
I have a cross section diagram of a tilley vaporiser and will post to you in time but for now , to answer some stuff, the internals of a vaporiser are not as simple as one might think. 1297799157-518977.gif

This diagram might help when you get to the stage of considering "peening" the nipple .

@Kiwiboy00 , no problem, you're very welcome. I found a couple more and also found a vape that has the tell tale signs of having been peened . Here are the cross sections to be going on with .... image vap.jpeg image vap.jpeg Vapouriser Patent 2.JPG
