Well, just found this guy, I do not understand a word he says, but he knows how to handlea torch. And fixing a ddnt in hisTilley!
Well by the look of the text, he is probably Korean. It's an amazing place. I have been there and they can do impossible things.Parts which would take months to come here in europe are there by morning. "My brother has a business and they had some"...
Looks like he is using the car body repair technique. Spotweding small hooks on the dent and pull them out.
Interesting video. I wonder if the pressure rating of the tank changes much after his resoldering work? It may even be higher!
There are not many lamps where you can remove the base plate like that. Most have a rolled over lip to hold it in place.
An interesting video! However, there is a simpler way of removing a Tilley base plate and that is to have a calor gas bottle with a single gas ring attached to it and just set the tank on it for a few minutes and the base plate will pop out, it's also possible to use a pressure stove for that task. I would have tested the pressure indicator before removing the base plate from that tank (and perhaps he did), but if a pressure indicator fails, it's usually because a solder joint has cracked and that would have been the perfect time to fix it. I would also have taken the opportunity to clean out the inside of the tank, because there was a lot of fuel residue on it.
Have any of you tried to remove dents by inserting a mandrel into the fount through the pump opening? Or by using steel balls and a strong magnet? There are a lot of Youtube videos of people removing dents from brass musical instruments with these.
