Hello there folks, I few weeks back I acquired a Hipolito 250 C.P. lantern. The lantern is in very good shape except for the scorching on the upper part of the hood. Since I have little knowledge of this type of lantern or it's clones I had difficulty determining the problem of the flare up and the fireball that kept happening. I'm sure there is a a way to adjust the burner assembly but no matter what I did I wasn't able to fix the problem or problems. I ended up finding another Petromax 250 C.P. inner hood or burner assembly which has solved the problems. There are no flaring or flames going out of the top of the hood. This lantern is marked on the bottom 0977 so I'm assuming the manufacture date is September of 1977 but I could be wrong. The things that were easily fixed was replacing the PIPs on the NRV and Rapid preheater. The pump leather needed to be oiled and the filler cap with pressure gauge needed a new washer. I did a test fire with very good results. I decided to try out some Butterfly mantles rated from 300 C.P. - 400 C.P. which are working quite well for this lantern. I well be checking these new mantles to see how they hold up over time. Here are the actions shots and this little lantern does produce a brilliant light that's for sure. Plus one night shot. The fount looks very good indeed. Here's a close up of the model number. You can see the extensive scorching on the top of the hood. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to bring back it's original luster. The lower part of the hood still looks pretty good. When I first fired this lantern up I used an Amish mix. I let it run until it was empty. I then filled the fount with straight kerosene and it is running very well indeed. Whether running this lantern on an Amish mix or straight kerosene this lantern produces a very bright light. I'm very pleased with this lantern now that it is running correctly. That is a lovely lamp you have there and the small tank I find very appealing - don't know why... well, I think I do... at the risk of sounding overly sexist if it was a woman it would have a very cute ass! Have you fiddled with the height of the J-tube above the jet to alter the fuel/air mix. All of my clones had to be re-adjusted apart from the Sea Anchor which is bizarre considering the dodgy build quality!
Congrats @Norman on your fine lamp. Hipólito's are very nice lanterns. They have the same build quality as Petromax if you ask me. I have one exactly the same, which is NOS and since the missus doesn't like the smell of paraffin, it stays a shelf-queen

I have nothing that is NOS but I do have many lanterns that I use on a regular basis and most look like they are users because they are meaning some would say they look like shit but the good thing is they don't smell like shit. It is too bad your wife doesn't like the smell but maybe she can handle or enjoy the lantern being used outside where everyone can enjoy the light. My wife doesn't like camping lanterns or stoves. If it isn't designed for the kitchen she wants nothing to do with it. If there is no switch to flip to get light again she wants nothing to do with it. I could make some very snide remarks but I don't want to ruffle the feathers of our lovely ladies who do enjoy this hobble and also maintain a very nice collection of lamps and lanterns. Hi again Norman. In the UK there is a cleaner called Harpic Max X10 which contains small proportion of hydrochloric acid. I've used it on some Anchor lantern hoods and it reduces the discoloration a bit.... although not entirely. I have recently acquired a 20cp Petromax clone and it definitely prefers Butterfly mantles. With smaller, sock type mantles there was a halo of unburnt kero but not now. One reason could be that the ball shape they make is closer to the vaporiser... just an idea.
