I've posted this on the Guild Q&A page, but I thought that I'd look for some help here. Here's a link to the Guild question: http://www.lampguild.org/cgi-bin/bboard/bboard.pl?QX=LG&SHOW=Q0006762 And here are photos of what I thought would be a Landi burner, but turned out to be something quite different! The separate "pilot" wick is intriguing, as is the jet and air tube assembly below the burner.
Al, you do not show the writing on the knob. This would be helpful. The design tells me it is an early alcohol mantle light with an additional heating flame inside the burner casing to vaporize the booze in there. There were quite some designs of this kind of burner in the early 20th century. Ara will certainly know the company. Erik
Al, Nice find! This is a very rare burner and it seems to be the Bec Prefere No. 2. I have a similar burner the "Bec Prefere No.1" and from what I know this is a alcohol fed burner. This burner is similar to the pilot flame 1895 Shuster&Baer patent burners like Engelfred, Auer Welsbach and the Eckel&Glinecke Primus-Spiritus-Vergaser. However the burner on this one is very special and different with a jet on the end of a tube and an upward mixing tube outside the burner body. Probably a way to get sufficient heat to the burner, and probably a German made burner for the French market. /Conny
I feel lucky! Here's a photo of the knob as requested. Can you tell me what kind of fount would fit it since it's without a fount or chimney. I fully intend to get it working! It also need a replacement mantle support, but that should not be difficult. Please tell me more about it if you can (wick material, etc.)
I got a fount from a Guild member! I fettled the wick for the "pilot burner", filled it with alcohol(spirits), and fitted it with a gas light mantle. Now I'm waiting for a quote from Fitri-Forms for a chimney to fit.
Vitri-Forms came back with a quote of $20 for a replacement chimney, and she is letting me pick it up at the plant when I'm in VT. She's also going to let me to an on-site fit check to see if some of her stock material will fit my Titus-Landi No. 42. I'm a happy camper
It's been a while, but I'm going to sell the lantern as it is. I'll post some pics in the library and the advert in the right place.
