Here is a 300cp Primus 1082 that I "accidently" bought from auction. Seems to be in reasonable condition, it will probably clean up nicely. My problem is that someone had put gasoline in the tank, I poured the gasoline out and put the lantern in the shed to air out the tank for few days. Where can I get the jet/cleaning needle and pump leather for this? Do petromax 350 parts work? I think I need to open and check the NRV too as the pump leather was soaked in gasoline too. Any help is appreciated as this is my first project lantern.
Congratulations on the 1082. Seems to be in very good condition. What year is it from? Petromax or Optimus parts can be used on this lantern, or most other Petromax clone lanterns for that matter. The pump leather could be a bit different for the Petromax though as I think it has a smaller centre hole. Easy enough to make the hole bigger though. Looking forward to seeing it in the gallery when finished.
In general terms, I wouldn't be too keen to disturb any NRV unless I was absolutely sure the seal needed replacing. They can stick open for a number of reasons e.g. a piece of crud on the sealing face or just gummed-up with fuel residue, and often they put themselves right very quickly once the lantern is brought back into use. If you do have to replace it, then best of luck - sometimes they're a pain...
The lamp says "at" on the bottom so it should be from 1954, but it's different from the 1954 model in the gallery. Mine has the model number on the tank and does not have the plate with the number. But it has the plugged hole for the rapid heater. Maybe it's early 54 from before they made the changes? Getting it running should be easy if Petromax parts work, but I'll take it apart for cleaning first. There is some heavy soot inside probably from the previous owners gasoline testing... I'll try to push some paraffin through the nrv and see if it will work.
The change from number on the tank and number on a label on the collar happened during 1954 so it is possible to see both with that date. What is interesting though is that you say it has the plug in the quick starter hole and 1082 stamped on the tank. I have not seen this before so could you please post some photos of this. Changeover models are interesting, but not very common from Primus.
Hi I think I was wrong with that... There is one plugged hole, but it may be for pressure gauge? Looking at pictures the quick starter hole should be on the other side, sorry about that. Today I made some progress, I found a fitting pump leather from my Optimus spare parts and the pump started to work, the nrv was first completely stuck but it think I got it working now. Local dealer wanted 19.95e for 350cp nipple+needle. The other local shop had complete rebuild kit for 150 and 500 for 12e, but not one for 350, so I had to mailorder the parts.
I put it together with nipple+needle from some chinese lantern I had in my parts box and it seems to work... Correct parts are in the mail.
Well done Mikko, it's looking good. The mantle looks like it might be a bit small. What size did you use?
I would use a 350cp mantle on this lantern. The Optimus 350 mantle (No. 4a) works well. A Luxor 300-400 is also good. There's a lot of different brands, but as long as they are in that sort of area they should be good.
Little update, I have been using this lantern a lot lately on my balcony... Seems to work nicely, I get some black soot on the bottom of the mantle, is this something to worry about? Here is the latest picture from end of summer, now we have snow on the ground.
