Hi All It’s time for some fun. Over the years I’ve been collecting and fettling lanterns and lamps I have come across some quite extreme backyard repairs. These repairs were often made in a heroic attempt to extend the life of the lamp and in the short term, some were successful and others fail miserably. So this thread is for you guys to post those extreme and radical repairs that you’ve found. I will kick off with this dubious collection with my contribution. This burner is from a Tilley X246 Guardsmen found at a Bric a Brac reseller. The other side. Note the top of the dome has been eroded and repaired. Now its crowning glory ........ Epoxy resin to hold in the, no doubt, burnt out thread of the mantle spigot ...... One has to wonder how long it would last if the lantern had been lit, 15 seconds? So, for a bit of fun, post your examples. Cheers Pete
Here is some exhaust cement on a bowlfire. Still was leaking as you can imagine. A new seal and it is right as rain.
This one works with a halo around the mantle. It was tested without a gallery. The mantle was not top quality.
Damn, they look like they were shot at and missed, sh.. on and hit!!! Never had one like that, must have been in an air raid!
Pic from the thread that kickstarted thus one. My failed attempt of a burner repair. Soldered a coin over a hole. No success
The main part of the burner body on this burner is almost triangular, and the air tubes have brewer’s droop. This example might not be completely wrecked, but it is 85% filled with mud wasp nests. This example has severe brewer droop. ...as does this one. This burner must have been heavily used in a Tilley heater. There is significant loss of brass on the outside of the bottom of the main body, and the burner holes are very warn and distorted. I’m starting to fill a brass recycling bucket, so there will be more to add to this thread. Cheers Tony
That’s very observant, @Digout. Here’s a couple more: This one is from Jim Dick’s box of sundry bits. It has been silbrazed at the air tube joints, and the mixing tube is fitted back with muffler sealer. When I get the chance I will test this to see how it performs. Here is a mixing tube with its threads burned out next to a NOS mixing tube. Cheers Tony
So only Tilleys have buggered burners? I have around 8 of them hanging in the shed awaiting attention. I am starting to fret in case any of them have this same affliction. Time for another Fosters.
@Kiwi This is part of a Preston loop generator/vapouriser from an Aladdin 1A. It was so packed with carbon, the pricker rod sheered when I was extracting it. Carbon from half of that piece of the dissection. Cheers Tony
I don't know what they were trying to achieve, but it has made the burner completely useless. It is from a Primus 991 and has been brazed together. It wasn't just silver soldered, it was actually brazed. If anyone has a complete 991 burner lying around they don't know what to do with, I could give it a good home.
Odd adaptions often turn up, I had a Tilley XN control cock turn up which had the spindle removed and the hole soldered up and a threaded pipe screwed in where the vapouriser fits. So that a Coleman valve and a 168k burner could be screwed onto the pipe and then the whole contraption could be fitted to a Tilley tank, the NRV., in the XN control cock had also been removed. Someone in the past must have been desperate for a working lamp.
There are other buggered beauties or mangled monstrosities out in lampie world that need the exorcism of daylight. please share your nasties with us all ....
What a great thread, very impressive to see what people will try to do to fix a problem if it works well great, if doesn't we laugh. I believe it's better to have a go and try to fix it up, if you don't have the money and need your lamp. I can't wait to see what others have out there.
‘Make do and mend’ was a well used phrase in my parents’ time, nothing was ever thrown out if it could be used in some way.
!! :-( That may be an early type burner where the burner spigot is much longer and threads right through the body? The body is longer on these and it also has the early thin locknuts and also the spigots that hold the glass in place ? Just the head of the little screw..
