Congratulations. Two very nice examples. I do like these early Coleman 242s. Just a question. When did the micro groove valve control knob change to the later 12 point knob? The reason I ask is, I have 2 x Canadian 242As built in 1935 and 1 x Canadian 242B built in 1936, they all have the microgroove valve control knob. Cheers Pete

Canadian lanterns are changed from micro groove valve knob to 12 point valve knob from around 1936. Toronto Canada used the micro groove valve knob until it was used up. So it's no mistake that your 1936 242B has a micro groove valve knob. The 1936 Canada 247 Scout also had a micro groove valve knob. Cheers, Junichi
PS. 242Junior and 242A are special check valves, but “North Star 2000 Lantern Check Valve, Part No. 2000-5281” can be used.

great examples. i just bought one with a round knob tip cleaner like jeans 2242 and wondering if anyone has found one like this and if it was an early one or not. it is a united states version.
Can you please elaborate on using the Northstar check valve to replace the 242A no-return valve? Do you have to replace anything else? How do you remove the NRV. Does the Northstar check valve install like the other standard Coleman check valve?
Why replace when you can repair ? If you don't have a check valve removal tool, you can use a heavy duty screwdriver with a thick blade. To greatly reduce the risk of damage to the slot in the check valve, wrap the shank of the screwdriver with electricians tape until it is a comfortable fit in the pump tube, this will keep it central in the pump tube and square-on in the slot. When free of the tank, dismantle the valve In this image you can see the old seal which is made from cork. Simply pick it out and replace it with 242 Check Valve Pip from oldcolemanparts.com, re-assemble, re-insert, job done.
