Just a quickie for UK members. Being fed up with the price of Nitromors paint stripper, I decided to give Wickes own-label a try. Used it over the weekend. Seems to spread better and strips just as well as Nitromors, but, it's 1/2 the price and you get twice as much. It's £5.99 for 1 litre or £11.99 for 2.5 litres.
Hi Trojandog a realy good deal for using nitromors your paying twicw as much just for the brand name, the solution is proberbly all most exactly the same for stripping painted lantern and some stove tanks i wonder if emersing them in caustic soda would work and would not do any damage to the tanks it would work out a lot cheaper
Hi Guys Iv'e been looking for some paint stripper today as it happens even before i saw your posts & i found online that Wickes was best on price , it seems that "Nitromors" was bought out a while ago by "Wynns" the car lube people who promptly halved the tin size & doubled the price £26.00 for 2L of product , As for meths the "Tool Station" has 2L for just over £6.00 where as a 4L tin costs £16.90 locally , so a saving of nearly a fiver 8) Only found this info out today so i thought it good to pass it on. Best regards Stu
Hi All! Sorry for bringing up a old thread, but will this take the paint and the chrome off to leave the brass finish behind? Thanks Adam
Hi Adam, paint yes, chrome no! If you want to get rid of the crome plating, it's eighter sanding paper & lots of elbow grease, or take it to a company that does crome plating, and have them de-crome it (in a special bath, using electrickerty). Best regards, Wim (maybe this can be done in the home shed, but I'm not smart enough for such magic! )
I wouldn't have thought chromium plating (or de-plating for that matter) would be something you'd want to do at home - the chemicals involved are very nasty indeed. Having said that, I think I recall someone, somewhere (CCS?) describing a DIY plating kit that was available. Or maybe it was in a car magazine I used to read...
Im not too fussed keeping the tank red, but its a bit of an odd one out being my other lamps are gold, May just buy a brass tank off the bay as it would probaly be alot cheaper
David, I never heard about home kits for chromeplating, but I have seen ads in classic bike mags for nickelplating DIY sets. Maybe that's what you saw in the tinbox mags? Best regards, Wim
