    I have a strange issue where my R1 heater will flicker on its original vaporiser and the lamp will flicker on its new vapouriser. If I swap them they are both fine burning bright. Any explanation for this strange phenomenon?

    First photo is the lamp. Not possible to show flicker with a photo
    Second photo is both tilleys with reversed vaporisers
    3rd photo is lamp on original vaporiser and me trying to manoeuvre mantle with screwdriver to see if that’s the issue.

    Note: Both stainless mantle and lamp mantle have holes in them

    @Lampost1

    What do you mean by the lamp mantle having holes in it?

    Small hole wider than the gauze in the heater mantle and a large tear from top to bottom in the lamp mantle. I’m aware it shouldn’t work but it does My camera is not good enough to take decent pics.

    The point still stands that both have large holes in the mantle (larger hole in the lamp mantle I guess) yet it works

    Woop! I managed to get decent photos. How the lamp works I don’t know when the mantle is almost in 2 pieces. The heater on the other hand has become red all over as expected. There is only a very small hole at the base of the mantle.

    This was the heater before the vaporiser swap. I’m sorry for the uncoordinated photos. Social distancing has led to disorganisation

    Be careful not to use that split mantle with a globe...

    My experience leads me to think that the heater is more tolerant to variation in jet size, burner condition etc, than a lantern or lamp.

    I would check that both burners are clean and their components tight. I would replace the torn mantle. Then I would see if you get the same result.

    Cheers

    What @Tony said.
    I seem to remember that the heater’s stainless steel mantle has 2 small manufactured holes in it, for what purpose, I don’t know.

    The heater gauze usually has a small hole in it.
    Using the lamp with a slit mantle could cause uneven heat flow resulting in a hot spot on the glass, with cracking a strong likelihood.
    Good to hear the heater is performing better.
