Good archive footage of various track and inspection lamps in use on the London Underground shown in UK tonight on BBC 4 'Night on Film: An A-Z of the Dark' 8pm-9pm. For UK members this should appear on the BBC iPlayer in a couple of hours. For non-UK members, I will try and download and post a clip. Especially enjoyed seeing a 'fluffer' light her 'fag' off a lamp.
very nice indeed there must be loads of this type of film out there just finding it is the problem so well spoted,,, kenny...
It's now on iPlayer for 7 days. The bit we are interested in is from 46.46 to 48.16. You can download the whole programme to your PC but it will auto-delete after 30 days. Sorry to non-UK members - it won't let me save the clip. PS.. Just realised that 'fluffer' has another interesting meaning!
Thanks Trojandog I to enjoyed the short piece about the underground fluffer's The best one was this lady lighting her cigarette from the lamp during their break. Al
Yep that is a pain in the %$# I don't understand why either. So is somebody finds a good solution let us know!
Done a bit of 'Googling' and found the original source of some of the footage (British Pathe). Hopefully this will work for members outside the UK. Link If you look just below the video footage window you will see a tab marked 'stills'. Click on this and you will see a selection of 'stills' from the footage. Click on the '1 Sec' tab and the stills change to once a second. Three of the stills are below. Sorry about the text - can't remove it. Also found this pic on The London Transport Museum website (looks posed as the lamps are not lit!): Also found more footage here (I love the 'inspector' in suit & tie on his track bicycle): Link
Could they be acetylene lamps hence lighting a cigarette off a naked flame they had a wide use in the rail industry. Also I cannot see any lens or globes. Al
