Decided to have a go with a 310 that I got hold of, with (I think) the original glass: Time to disassemble: It’s got some weird blue seals, and in some unusual places: Time to clean it all up, fit new seals and test it!
Great success, it appeared! After 5 mins it gradually came to a stop. Doesn’t seem to be leaking from the fount ....
Well, assuming it had enough air, perhaps a dirty vapouriser? Maybe worth doing a dunk test in water to see if there’s a small leak somewhere? Otherwise, looking good!
You can tell that lamp has not been used much, the vaporizer looks so clean and yes!!!! the all important original glass. When it stopped did you try and give it a pump? just wondering if it was loosing pressure or the vaporizer just got blocked? you do find that a 'quick' flick turn of the pricking needle, is enough to unblock the hole and bring it back to life (sometimes 2 - 3 times) Martin
It's certainly the correct round-shouldered glass globe for the 310 - whether it's the original (strictly speaking) is moot. These are getting quite rare now so you've done well but be careful with it so it doesn't come to grief. If the worst happens, the later, angled-shouldered glass globe will fit and work fine but it just won't look as good... When the lantern failed after 5 minutes, was there any pressure left in the tank? It there was, then either the jet was blocked and (as Martin says), a couple of quick twists of the jet cleaner knob will clear it or the vapouriser is knackered and will need changing. If there was no pressure left in the tank, then either the pump wasn't making much pressure to start with or it was and air was leaking out of the tank past the filler cap and/or the pressure release valve seal(s). That blue 'seal' makes me wonder - why did someone see fit to add that? Was the non-return valve (NRV) at the bottom of the pump-tube leaking, perhaps, and rather than fit a new seal in there, they thought they could bodge it. A leaking NRV results in the pump-rod coming out of the pump when the lantern is lit usually followed by a paraffin leak from the end of the pump. Let us know about the tank pressure after failure and someone will advise...
Did you put a new pip in the NRV? and give it a good cleaning? Sometime IF the NRV is leaking its because the brass pip holder sometimes can be a bit sticky due to crud, so even if you have replaced the internal pip it can jam open slightly. I have had this happen a few times before.
Check the seal in that little air release valve on top of the tank cap. I had one leak on one of my 310's and it damn near drove me nuts until I found it!
