The Guardsman arrived today! I quickly put it together and now I'm wondering: What holds the burner assembly onto the lantern besides gravity?

Colemans are held in place with the top nut, but this appears to simply rest on the cage and the vapourizer.

My Tilley book hasn't arrived yet, so I'm putting my ignorance out for all to see

There should be 3 air tubes that screw into the burner and 3 brass sleeve screws that screws into the hood,

I will upload a picture Next Year lol!

Depends which version of the 'Guardsman' you have, Al - I put Guardsman like that because giving their products names was an affectation Tilley indulged themselves in for a relatively short period sometime in the 1950s. I don't know when they started or when they stopped doing it.

Anyway, if you have one of the earlier versions with the handle attached by two wire loops on opposite uprights of the globe cage, then gravity alone holds the hood and burner on the rest of the lantern.

If, however, you have the later version where the handle attaches through two clips on opposing uprights, it's gravity again, but the ends of the handle prevent the hood and burner being raised. To lift off the hood, you have to put the handle in the horizontal position and then remove it by easing the two ends from the clips. The hood and burner then simply lift off, as in the earlier version. Hope that helps...

Each air intake tube has a threaded outer end on which is screwed a brass collar with a stepped end. Unscrewing the collars effectively lengthens each air intake tube so that the stepped ends of the collars engage in plain holes in the hood, thus holding the burner in place...

That describes what I have, so I'm ok as long as I keep gravity UNDER the lantern :)

There you have it! At least nothing is missing. Many thanks David!
