Tuesday is the 200 anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale and an excuse to light some lamps..... NHS England » Public Called Up To Help The NHS ‘Shine A Light’ For Our Nurses
You have helped make up my mine on a 1A Aladdin im doing, im going to theme a red cross lantern, for the nurses and all health workers. May not be ready for tuesday but later in the week may be
Well, one of my daughters is an essential NHS worker though not front-line Covid-19. She's currently ill but her work (the NHS!) won't give her a test because she hasn't a temperature and isn't coughing. On the other hand, her GP says that people with Covid-19 are presenting with other signs and symptoms, including one my daughter is suffering from so she ought to have a test. Now, according to Boris et al there's excess testing capacity but at the same time my daughter can't have a test - shambolic or what. So there, for now, the matter rests and it's rather worrying. Hey-ho...
For the nurses... and in a little while it will be time to light this lamp and listen to an audio book. Tony
An update: my daughter by-passed the test refusal from her employers (the NHS) and obtained one this morning via the Government procedure. We'll have to wait up to 5 days for the result but it's progress at least...
Thanks Jean. The testing site proved to be one run by the Army on a local retail park. Photography is forbidden and dash-cams have to be turned off. However, I think my daughter must have inadvertently taken a photograph before she drove past the warning sign - oops! They give you a self-administered test kit which you take to another part of the site. You then carry out the test in your car and then drive to another part of the site to hand in your swab. It took ages and was a bit shambolic but it's done. Results in 48 hours but may take up to 5 days - presumably so they can fly the tests to the US if needs be...
I went old school with candle power. @Jean J I think/hope you'll approve of the shade on this wickie I also lit.
@AussiePete I am with you there, very fitting given many would have been used to light field hospitals.
My first light up of my Jacobean in honour of all nurses and especially for Anne, hope we will meet up again before too long. Stay safe.
Well, I had to take a rain, cold and wind check last night so I'm going to try again tonight - it'll give me time to sort out a couple of extra lanterns - assuming I'm not on the bliddy phone all day like I was yesterday. My daughter assured me Florence Nightingale wouldn't mind...
A few lamps lit for the nurses, went with a railway theme-- X246BR, AL8 and a LT1 copy, with an X246B 500 for company.
@Jean J Aww, Jean, thanks so much! Ann got all emotional, the first time a lamp has managed to do that! I’ll be lighting up tonight as the weather was against me last night. Well, it was by the time I remembered!
No photos I'm afraid but the TL10 we had at home when I was a lad was burning brightly in the window. A Tilley OL50 and a DAY - LITE (with reflector / shade) gave a lot of light outside. Looking around, the only other house I could see with a light in the window was that of the lady across the street, 92 years young and still going strong. @David Shouksmith & @BigStevie I hope the weather is more in your favour tonight. Henry.
Thanks Henry, it was. Today's been cold and windy here and I had quite a few interruptions to the fettling as well so I wasn't hopeful. But around tea-time, the clouds parted and the wind dropped - much more clement for lantern shenanigans! I thought the X246B 500 series I made was going to play ball - making all the right noises at the right times - but after lighting wouldn't burn for any length of time due to losing pressure from somewhere. Also the hood won't separate from the globe cage for some reason. First pressure lantern I'd lit for 3-4 years as well - bah! The Bialaddin 310 I'd unearthed decided it wasn't going to co-operate either. Bliddy pressure lamps... So it was down to this Coleman gassie which performed well. One lung not as bright as the other but it lit straight away after no more than a quick clean-up:- It quickly got very cold once the sun went down so I supped up and quickly headed back indoors. Anyway, Happy Belated Birthday, Florence and thanks to all NHS staff for their dedication - it's much appreciated...
