Lit my Tilley 246B and it started poping after about 4 or 5 seconds, so I gave it a few more pump's it settled down after about a minuet or so but it was not burning as bright as it usually burns. Is there anything wrong with it ?
@Pitsmoor Col The pop pop pop actually sound like its running too lean, not enough fuel. You may want to check the delivery from the generator. With no flame nearby, with the hood removed and just the generator exposed, you should get a nice stream out of the generator's jet when you open the cock with a pressurised fount of fuel. Assuming that you have plenty of fuel in the fount/tank and there's sufficient pressure, check the screen/filter on the bottom of the cock, it maybe partially blocked. Is it burning sort of reddish and smoky? If so it could be running a tad rich, to much fuel to air ratio. Check that the air tubes etc are clear, a partial blockage will cause it to run rich. The other main cause is the actual generator's jet maybe worn allowing too much fuel. Cheers Pete
I gave it a bit of a fettle this morning, took it all to bits replaced the little Black valve in the control cock and cleaned it out got what looked like some tiny bits of sand, put fresh fuel in and lit it. It's back to it's bright brilliant self again.
@Pitsmoor Col Well done on getting her going. You’ve now got more experience and you’re more than ready for the next fettle. Cheers Pete
Cheers Pete. It wont be long before the next fettle I have 3 Lamps in working order now, 1 Guardsman Dated 12 60 and now I have 2. 246B one Dated 2 74 and one dated 12 77. However I have noticed the 246B dated 2 74. is Brighter than the others, (hope you are following this) Does this mean the Vaporiser on the Brightest one is working better ?
Vap tubes wear out with use, the little hole widen with wear and age so it messes with the fuel air mix. Could also be down to the age make of the mantles
@Pitsmoor Col As @plantpot said, simply wear on the generator’s jet, the 246B may have less usage and / or there may be a difference in the mantles.
Most of us could probably name two dozen factors that combine to determine the light output of a lantern - the vapouriser is just one of those - so to answer your question, maybe, maybe not. I've found that sometimes you get a lantern that just seems to work much better than normal - I've a Tilley X246B and a Bialaddin 315 that are staggeringly bright to the extent that folk have complained they're dazzled by them. I didn't fettle them any differently so I've no idea why they're like this, they just are. My best explanation is that the vapouriser, burner and mantle seem to have worn in together and somehow 'like' each other. On the other hand, I have a Veritas Superb that worked very well. One day it took a slight knock which damaged the mantle and I had to change that. Since then, it won't even be bothered to light...
I want to return to the issue of "pop pop pop". My first comment on this thread was related to the fact that the "pop, pop, pop" of a Tilley can be related to too little pressure at light up. Tilley recommended 15 to 20 full pumps at start up, then open the cock, and the mantle ignites (usually with a "pop"). Leave it like that, and the pressure will drop and it will go "pop, pop, pop". The mantle will also go "pop, pop, pop" if the lantern is running out of fuel. Cheers Tony
Well, you certainly aren't drinking beer if that photo you posted today is real. That stuff is cats p!ss.
I heard the brewery were struggling a little after some adverse publicity recently. Apparently that lager was left on supermarket shelves when all other types were hoovered off. So I thought I'd broaden my life-experience and give them a little support at the same time - I'm generous like that. Anyway, that coming from someone whose national brew is Fosters - well...
I never drink that Fosters rubbish either. The true Australian beer (leaving out the craft and so-called craft beers) is Coopers. Coopers is brewed properly, and has sludge in the bottom of the bottle. Coopers is still a family owned company. They are also the biggest supplier of “home brew kits” it the world. Tomorrow my son and I are making a batch of Coopers English Dark Ale home brew. Cheers Tony
Pop, pop, pop... There's a clue in the name there, Tony... Anyway, it's clear I've no taste in beverages - if I'm not drinking "cat's piss", I'm chasing it down with "horse liniment"...
I have to agree with Tony, Coopers make a great beer and I do like their stout. As a kid we enjoyed many a “Port A Gaff” (not sure if this is the right spelling). Basically it’s 50% Coopers stout and 50% lemonade. Ahh! The memories My now favourite tipple is Tooheys Old, a nice black beer. Pete
@David Shouksmith Damn it David, you did take my bottle of Jack when you were in my garage! By the way, that wasn't Jack in that bottle.....sorry.....
Thanks @Tony Press I was a born and bred South Aussie. It was/is a good brew, us kids though it was the ultimate. I remember the adults used to say “there was a baby in every bottle of Coopers stout” ........ now what ever did they mean ? Peter
Hi folks I knew it wouldn’t be long before Veritas Superb and @David Shouksmith appeared together in a post together . I’m beginning to believe you are secretly in love with these seductive mistresses. Regards Jeremy
I must be, Jeremy, given the amount of them I have - 6+ I think. Mind, most of them were accumulated trying to find one that actually worked or could be made to work... Having said that, we've had quite a few reports recently of folk getting them to work well, seemingly without too much fuss. I even recall someone saying his VS was his favourite (or best?) lantern! For me, they're equivalent to the Coleman 275 - the infamous 'turd'. I've got half a dozen of those, too...
