You won't be able to pump as far as if the mantle was on, but you will certainly get a good idea of whether to carry on with a mantle? You will see the 'flamelets' start to 'lift-off' if you pump too hard, as the mantle won't be there to contain them...hope that makes sense
@Gary Waller You're not the only one, I just happened to look at some of my burners yesterday and noted the various differences.
Yes most lamps will run without a mantle. Some may require a fairly low pressure and continuous heat on the generaor/vaporiser. It is a good way to test the function of generators and burners without the expense of wasting mantles. ::Neil::
