In the manual found here: De oude petromax catalogus (the English version---last link) on the 3rd page (of the pdf!) it has this text: I have noticed brown spots on the top of the hood and my lamp is old so I do not want to make it worse. But there is no information about this "transparent protecting layer". Does anyone know what it is? It says "the layer of the hood has to be polished". Does it just mean to polish the lamp or it refers to a layer of some sort that must be re-applied on an lamp which is old and then polish again?
Its never a bad idea to polish her up every now and then. Brass colours with time due the oxidation. To prevent that brass lanterns are sealed with a clear lacquer, but that isn't heat resistant, So this lacquer should be removes from the top parts. The tank doesn't get that hot.
Hmmm, but this implies that when one buys a new brass lantern then he first has to polish it and then light it up. Is that correct? Or how do you remove the lacquer?
It is only the top part which needs to have the lacquer removed and you can use paint stripper or anything which will soften or dissolve varnish.
